**Don't You Know There's a War On?by AviReviewed October 29, 2002.
HarperTrophy, 2001. 208 pages. Avi is one of those authors who writes some books that I’m crazy about and others that don’t hit me as hard. All of his books, though, are good. I guess that he writes such a wide variety of subject matter that I can’t expect to be crazy about them all. Don’t You Know There’s a War On? is set in 1943 in Brooklyn. Eleven-year-old Howie Crispers learns that his beloved teacher, Miss Gossim, is going to be fired. Howie wants desperately to figure out a way to save her job. This story is set in a background of collecting scraps for the war effort, air raid drills, and Howie and his friend’s fathers off fighting in the war. Avi captures that world beautifully, peppering the kids’ conversations with slang expressions popular at that time. Howie and his best friend fantasize about catching enemy spies and helping the war effort. It all adds up to an entertaining and poignant story of America during World War II.
