**Ned Mouse Breaks Away

by Tim Wynne-Jones

Pictures by Dusan Petrocic

Reviewed June 30, 2003.
A Groundwood Book, Toronto, 2003.  68 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (JF WYN).

This is an entertaining beginning chapter book about Ned Mouse, who has been imprisoned for writing in his cheese, “The Government is Unfair to Mice.”

Ned Mouse is determined to escape from prison and tries all sorts of ingenious methods, only to be accidentally stopped every time.  Finally, after years and years of imprisonment, he thinks of an idea reminiscent of the Tin Man in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.  It’s a bit gruesome if you think about it too long, but I don’t think that kids will mind.

A light-hearted and clever story.
