***Walking the BibleAn Illustrated Journey for Kids Through the Greatest Stories Ever Toldby Bruce Feilerillustrated by Sasha Meeret Reviewed
July 13, 2005.
HarperCollins Publishers, New York, 2004. 108 pages. Available at Sembach Library (J 222.109 FEI). This is a watered-down version of Bruce Feiler’s book for adults, also called Walking the Bible. Both books tell about how he took a travel odyssey with a guide to the sites of Genesis. I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I hadn’t already read the fuller story. I did like the way this book included photographs. As it is, this is a great book for kids to help them understand the geography of the Old Testament. Bruce Feiler says, “When I think of the Bible now, I don’t think of a book. I think of a map. I think of the family at the heart of the story, beginning in Mesopotamia, traveling down to the Promised Land, continuing down to Egypt, then passing forty years in the desert before returning to the Promised Land. This journey has a beautiful balance that I never understood before visiting these places.” Reading Bruce Feiler’s books also help the reader understand this beautiful balance and give you new insights into the stories of Genesis.
