***The Mummy Case

by Elizabeth Peters

Reviewed December 7, 2002.
Congdon & Weed, New York, 1985.  313 pages.
Available at Vogelweh Library (F PET).

This is the third Amelia Peabody mystery.  This time Amelia and her husband bring their precocious son Ramses along with them.  Although Ramses’ precocity is so extreme as to be a bit unbelievable, that does make him extremely amusing and adds fun to Elizabeth Peters’ already entertaining writing.

I didn’t rate this book as high because I didn’t like the negative caricature of Christian missionaries that was given.  I also felt that the solution was a bit far-fetched and unbelievable and would have been hard to guess from the clues.

Still, this is another entertaining murder mystery in turn of the Century Egypt, peppered with archaeological details and delightful characters.  I’m definitely hooked on this series.

Amelia Peabody Mystery #1:  Crocodile on the Sandbank
Amelia Peabody Mystery #2:  The Curse of the Pharaohs
Amelia Peabody Mystery #4:  Lion in the Valley
Amelia Peabody Mystery #5:  The Deeds of the Disturber
Amelia Peabody Mystery #13:  Lord of the Silent
