****A Second Legacyby Joanna Trollopewriting as Caroline Harvey
Reviewed May 7, 2004.
Berkley Books, New York, 2002. Originally published in 1993. 390 pages. Sonderbooks Stand-out 2004, #4, Historical Fiction The sequel to Legacy of Love, A Second Legacy tells us the story of two more generations of descendants of the glamorous Victorian, Charlotte, who traveled to Afghanistan and found her true love. The book begins with the story of Alexia, in 1965. She falls in love and marries, but is abandoned after she gets pregnant. Her Uncle James helps her discover a life of her own by leaving her the old family castle, the one her great-great-great grandmother lived in so many years ago. The final adventure follows Alexia’s daughter Carly in 1988. She brings the story full circle by taking a trip to Afghanistan to help make a documentary. All the stories in both books deal with the girls coming of age, finding their own way in the world, and dealing with love. I wish that a few of the girls would have gotten along better with their mothers, but it did make the books interesting as each daughter struggled to find her own path, her own dream. This is a nice warm story about generations of one family through the years. Reviews of other books by Joanna Trollope: Legacy of Love Sense and Sensibility Copyright © 2005 Sondra Eklund. All
