*****The Beggar King and the Secret of Happinessby Joel ben Izzy Reviewed December 20, 2004.
Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 2003. 228 pages. Available at Sembach Library (B BEN). Sonderbooks Stand-out 2004, My Favorite Nonfiction Book of the Year Here’s a wonderful, luminescent book about one man’s story and the meaning of life. Joel ben Izzy made his living as a storyteller. Then he lost his voice, so he couldn’t speak above a whisper. With the help of his old mentor, he began to question what God was trying to tell him and what he was supposed to learn from this terrible setback. Joel ben Izzy takes us along on his journey. At the start of every chapter, he presents a simple story. The stories alone would be worth the price of the book. They are full of the wisdom of the ages and the cultures from which they came. Woven into Joel ben Izzy’s own story, they make powerful reading. This book is a delight. Copyright © 2005 Sondra Eklund. All
