This little book reprints two essays written by E. B. White for The New
Yorker. The first is “Farewell to Model T,” written in 1936.
The author recalls with fondness the Model T Fords that everyone used to
drive, and all the tinkering that they took. It was an eye-opener for
me, who never dreamed of being able to use the “reverse pedal” in place of
the brake.
The next essay, “From Sea to Shining Sea” was written in 1953, telling
about a trip that Mr. White took across America thirty-one years before in
one of those Model Ts. He and his friend were young. Instead of
taking along a Blue Book, they brought a Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary,
“to serve as a constant reminder that our true destination was the world
of letters.”
These two essays are amusing and enlightening. Pick up this book
for some quick entertainment.
