***Portraits 9/11/01
The Collected ‘Portraits of Grief’ from The New York Times
Reviewed May 7, 2002.
Times Books, 2002. 558 pages.
I’m choosing to review this book before I finish reading it, since
that’s going to take a very long time, and I want people to know about
it. This is a collection of stories and pictures of 1,910 people
who died on September 11th. The book attempts to celebrate and honor
their lives, rather than just remember them as victims. New York Times
reporters interviewed families and friends in order to try to capture some
of the most memorable moments and sum up what their lives were about.
When we got it at the library, I knew I couldn’t read it in three
weeks, so on a whim I ordered a copy from Amazon.com. Now I can read
it a little bit at a time. To me it seems the perfect tribute.
Give these people names and faces, make them more than just a number.
This book is sad, but it’s a beautiful tribute to life.
