****Unfinished BusinessA Democrat and a Republican Take onThe 10 Most Important Issues Women Face Todayby Dr. Julianne Malveaux and Deborah Perry Reviewed December 20,
2003.
A Perigee Book (Penguin Putnam), New York, 2002. 305 pages. I’ve always liked it when books on political themes consider both sides of an issue, not simply giving the platform of one party. That’s exactly the idea of this book. It talks about ten important issues for women, presenting solutions and challenges from a Republican and also from a Democrat. (They alternate issues as to who goes first.) You will probably find yourself, as I did, thinking the one who most agrees with you is the most plausible and insightful in their comments. However, I did appreciate hearing both sides of the issues and beginning to understand how someone else could see it in such a different way without actually trying to do harm. The issues the women discussed were equal pay, work and family, education, the economic safety net, crime and violence, race matters, reproductive rights, foreign policy and globalization, and the environment. There is also a strong emphasis on women getting involved. Each section of each chapter ends with addresses and websites of organizations with which you can get involved if you want to work on a certain issue. This is an excellent book that will make you think hard about public policy. Copyright © 2005 Sondra Eklund. All
