I don't review books I don't like!

***Gift of Goldby Beverly ButlerPocket Books, 1975. 260 pages. I spied this book on my friend Kathe’s shelf, and snapped it up. It is a sequel to Light a Single Candle, a book I read and loved as a kid. In Light a Single Candle, Cathy Wheeler loses her sight at the age of 14, which parallels the author’s own experience. It is a moving and outstanding book. In Gift of Gold, Cathy is struggling through a college course in speech therapy. She gets a new advisor who doesn’t think she’ll be able to handle it, and assigns her the most difficult student at the clinic in order to get her to give up. Cathy must deal with this at the same time as romance comes into her life. A friend gets married, and her life is contrasted with Cathy’s. This book is old-fashioned in that it portrays marriage as an alternative to college, but other than that, it presents an interesting and enjoyable story.
