****Waters Luminous and Deep

Shorter Fictions

by Meredith Ann Pierce

Sonderbooks Stand-out 2004, #11, Fantasy for Young Adults

I snapped up this book when it came in, since I loved Meredith Ann Pierce’s story in the Firebirds collection.  Indeed, that story is the first one presented in this book.

Usually in a short story collection, some are excellent, some are good, and others are only so-so.  In Waters Luminous and Deep, all of the stories are consistently excellent and magical.

The stories aren’t variants of specific fairy tales, but they have a mythic, fairy-tale feel to them, which is my favorite kind of fantasy story.  We have princesses, queens, and fools.  We have quests and sea voyages, enchantments and curses.  But all have an original twist, making new resonant stories out of old classic themes.

I’m going to have to find more of Meredith Ann Pierce’s books; she’s a masterful weaver of tales.
