It’s time for Sonderling Sunday – That time when I let you know the German translation of various bizarre phrases using the book Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/em>, the translation of The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I left off at the start of Chapter Ten, 10. Kapitel<\/em>, page 101 and Seite 129. The start of this chapter is a good way to start the blog post.<\/p>\n

Das alles ist ja nun ganz gut und sch\u00f6n, aber was hat es eigentlich mit dem Belgischen Scherzkeks auf sich?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In English, that is:<\/p>\n

This is all well and good, but what about the Belgian Prankster?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Now, I won’t answer the question, but I’ll give you some phrases that pop up:<\/p>\n

“hottest controversy” = hitzigsten Diskussionen<\/em><\/p>\n

“sprawling” = ausgedehntes<\/em><\/p>\n

This one’s much longer in German:
\n“interlinked airborne platforms” = miteinander verbundener schwebender Plattformen<\/em> (“with one another bound together floating platforms”)<\/p>\n

“a terrifyingly scarred Icelandic assassin” = ein schrecklich vernarbter isl\u00e4ndischer Meuchelm\u00f6rder<\/em><\/p>\n

“steel-toothed” = Stahlz\u00e4hne<\/em><\/p>\n

“a noseless Nigerian explosives expert” = einem nasenlosen nigerianischen Sprengstoffexperten<\/em><\/p>\n

“massive-headed” = mit einem Wasserkopf<\/em> (“with a water-head”)<\/p>\n

Why did I never learn this? “men’s toilet” = M\u00e4nnerklo<\/em><\/p>\n

Oh, I’m afraid I don’t think this line of translation is up to snuff:
\n“And you are a Boobly-Boobly-Boo-Boo” = Und du bist ein alter Schaumschl\u00e4ger<\/em><\/p>\n

And here’s something of a tongue-twister:
\n\u00bbEin Schaumschl\u00e4ger!\u00ab, sch\u00e4umte der Chinese.<\/em> = “‘A boobly-boobly-boo-boo?’ raged Ken Kiang.”<\/p>\n

Based on Google, that’s something like “a foam-batter!” foamed the Chinese.<\/p>\n

I like this one:
\n“corner booth” = Ecknische<\/em> (“corner niche”)<\/p>\n

“audacious” = abgebr\u00fchter<\/em> (“hard-boiled”)<\/p>\n

“vengeance” = Vergeltung<\/em> (“payback”)<\/p>\n

“fluorescent lights” = Neonlampen<\/em><\/p>\n

“tiny paws” = winzigen Pf\u00f6tchen<\/em><\/p>\n

“fate’s plaything” = ein Spielball des Schicksals<\/em><\/p>\n

“satanic roar” = satanischen Brausens<\/em><\/p>\n

“jokester” = Witzbold<\/em><\/p>\n

“inscrutable” = undurchdringlichen<\/em><\/p>\n

“errand boy” = Laufbursche<\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s a fun one:
\n“Well, la-dee-da.” = Na gut, heiliger Bimbam.<\/em><\/p>\n

Well, that’s all for tonight! <\/p>\n

My thought for today: If I’m in a special corner booth, then we must have:<\/p>\n
