<\/a><\/p>\nThis week, I’m back to the book that started it all, James Kennedy<\/a>‘s Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/em>, The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em>. We left off<\/a> on page 152, which is Seite 192 in the German edition.<\/p>\n I’ll look at some interesting phrases:<\/p>\n “Aunt Lily swung over” = Tante Lily tauchte auf<\/em> (“dipped up”)<\/p>\n “You did yourself proud this morning, Jo.” = Du hast dir heute Morgen sehr viel Respekt verschafft, Jo.<\/em> “She was stunned” = Verbl\u00fcfft sah sie<\/em><\/p>\n “face fell” = Miene ver\u00e4ndert<\/em> (“mien changed”)<\/p>\n “ferociously” = eindringlich<\/em><\/p>\n “warily” = argw\u00f6hnisch<\/em><\/p>\n “this would all explode in our faces” = w\u00fcrden sie uns \u00fcbelst beschimpfen<\/em><\/p>\n “hanging around the edges of conversations” = lauschte den Gespr\u00e4chen der anderen Partyg\u00e4ste<\/em> “I’m off” = Ich verschwinde<\/em> (“I’m disappearing”)<\/p>\n This is a bit clunkier: This has a fun sound in German: “trapdoor” = Fallt\u00fcr<\/em><\/p>\n “dim” = d\u00e4mmrigen<\/em><\/p>\n “lit” = entz\u00fcndete<\/em> (“inflamed”)<\/p>\n “as the room became brighter” = als das Licht aufflammte<\/em> (“as the light blazed”)<\/p>\n “tapestry” = Wandteppich<\/em> (“wall carpet”)<\/p>\n “fire-scorched, blood-spurting battles” = von Pulverdampf und Feuer durchsetzte blutr\u00fcnstige Schlachten<\/em> I have to list this one because of the lovely English phrase I’ve never seen in a book before: Not so lovely, but still intriguing: “with a capering tiger, convoluted flower, or snickering face” “creaking, clunking, and squealing” = Quietschen, Klappern und Knarren<\/em> (funny that “creaking” is Quietschen. But it sounds creaky in German.)<\/p>\n “a raucous parade” = eine \u00fcppige Parade<\/em><\/p>\n “enormous walrus-like demons” = gewaltige walrossartige D\u00e4monen<\/em><\/p>\n “kicking down buildings” = zertr\u00fcmmerten Geb\u00e4ude<\/em><\/p>\n And I’ll finish up with this distinctive sentence:<\/p>\n “Her bones turned to ice.” = Ihr wurde kalt bis auf die Knochen.<\/em> (“She was cold to the bone.”)<\/p>\n There you have it! I dare you to use gewaltige walrossartige D\u00e4monen<\/em> or einem h\u00f6hnischen Gesicht<\/em> in a sentence this week! Hmm. The way our heat’s been in the library lately, I may well have an opportunity to say, Ich war kalt bis auf die Knochen.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n(“listened to the conversation of the other party guests”)<\/p>\n
\n“Okay, but it had better be good.”
