It’s time for Sonderling Sunday! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books, or, in this case, the German translation of an English classic, Pride and Prejudice<\/a>,<\/em> Stolz und Vorurteil.<\/p>\n

I’ve taken a few weeks off from Sonderling Sunday due to a month-long headache, and I’m really glad to be back! During that time, I did some comfort reading, rereading this old favorite, so it’s a good time to choose this favorite for Sonderling Sunday. We already looked at Chapter One<\/a> back in January, so I will start in on Chapter Two, Kapitel 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Let’s start with the first sentence, even though it’s nowhere as classic as the first sentence in Chapter One:<\/p>\n

“Mr. Bennet was among the earliest of those who waited on Mr. Bingley.”
\n= Mr. Bennet geh\u00f6rte zu den ersten, die Mr. Bingley ihre Aufwartung machten.<\/em>
\n(“Mr. Bennet belonged to the first, that Mr. Bingley their waiting made.”)<\/p>\n

“disclosed” = enth\u00fcllt<\/em><\/p>\n

“trimming a hat” = ihren Hut mit einem Besatz zu versehen<\/em>

This one we know from commercials:

Here’s the word from the title, Vorurteil<\/em>, there translated from “prejudice.”
\n“advantage” = Vorurteil<\/em><\/p>\n

“circumspection” = Umsicht<\/em><\/p>\n

“But if we do not venture” = Aber wenn wir nicht den Mut dazu haben<\/em>
\n(“But if we do not have the courage”)<\/p>\n

“Nonsense!” = Unsinn!<\/em><\/p>\n

“emphatic exclamation” = energische Protest<\/em><\/p>\n

“deep reflection” = tiefe Betrachtungen<\/em><\/p>\n

“something very sensible” = etwas sehr Verst\u00e4ndiges<\/em><\/p>\n

“astonishment” = Verbl\u00fcffung<\/em><\/p>\n

“neglect” = geringzusch\u00e4tzen<\/em> (“low-to-value”)<\/p>\n

“a good joke” = ein h\u00fcbscher Scherz<\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s a nice long word:
\n“raptures” = Begeisterungsausbr\u00fcche<\/em> (“enthusiasm outbreaks”)<\/p>\n

“fatigued” = \u00fcberdr\u00fcssig<\/em><\/p>\n

“stoutly” = beherzt<\/em><\/p>\n

“conjecturing” = mit Mutma?ungen dar\u00fcber verbracht<\/em><\/p>\n

That’s it for Chapter Two. A few fun new words to try to work into conversation. My favorite has to be the longest. The next time I’m excited about something, I will indulge in Begeisterungsausbr\u00fcche<\/em>.<\/p>\n
