It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books. Tonight it’s back with my stand-by, The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a>, Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Last time<\/a>, we left off on page 185 in English, Seite 234 auf Deutsch<\/em>. The squires are about to go in search of the Schwenk.<\/p>\n

As usual, I’ll just look for fun phrases that I never before realized I really wanted to know how to say in multiple languages. As usual, I’ll find an abundance of these in The Order of Odd-Fish<\/em>. (I won’t give any spoilers. If you haven’t read the book, I’m hoping these phrases will intrigue you.)<\/p>\n

“East Squeamings” = Ost-Heikel<\/em> (“East-Delicate”) (Like “squeamish,” I think.)<\/p>\n

“shacks” = Scheunen<\/em><\/p>\n

“a sprawling fish market” = einem ausgedehnten Fischmarkt<\/em> (“an outstretched fish market”)<\/p>\n

“stalls” = Buden<\/em><\/p>\n

“dripping bunches” = tropfenden B\u00fcndeln<\/em><\/p>\n

“wriggling white blobs” = zuckenden wei?en Klecksen<\/em><\/p>\n

“shimmering fins” = schimmernden Flossen<\/em><\/p>\n

“panting mouths” = Luft schnappenden M\u00e4ulern<\/em> (“air snapping mouths”)<\/p>\n

“bulging tubes” = aufgedunsene R\u00f6hren<\/em><\/p>\n

“trussed up” = fest verschn\u00fcrt<\/em><\/p>\n

“bustling cacophony” = umtriebige Kakofonie<\/em><\/p>\n

“booth” = Nische<\/em> (“niche”)<\/p>\n

“why settle for second best?” = warum sich mit dem Zweitbesten zufriedengeben?<\/em>
\n(“why yourself with the second-best to-peace-give?”)<\/p>\n

No surprise here:
\n“lugged” = schleppte<\/em><\/p>\n

“smoke” = qualmte<\/em><\/p>\n

“passed around” = herumreichten<\/em><\/p>\n

“floating in black-licorice broth” = in einer schwarzen Lakritzbr\u00fche schwammen<\/em><\/p>\n

“devastating” = verheerend<\/em><\/p>\n

And I’ll end with the final sentence in the section:
