It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books. Today I’m going back to The Book of a Thousand Days<\/a><\/em>, by Shannon Hale, Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Last time<\/a>, I left off just before Day 14, Tag 14<\/em>.<\/p>\n

My method is to pick out interesting and useful phrases that it suddenly seems vital how to say in another language. You don’t have to have read the book, though I always hope the phrases I choose might intrigue you into doing so if you haven’t already.<\/p>\n

“sacks of barley” = Gerstes\u00e4cken<\/em><\/p>\n

“squeaks and scratches kept nipping at my dreams”
\n= ein Quieken und Scharren kratzte an meinen Tr\u00e4umen.<\/em><\/p>\n

“to spare” = abzwacken<\/em> (Google: “extort”)<\/p>\n

“nibbled” = geknabbert<\/em><\/p>\n

“tallow candles” = =Talglichter<\/em><\/p>\n

“rat-spoiled food” = rattenverseuchtem Essen<\/em><\/p>\n

“fashioned” = gebastelt<\/em> (“tinkered”)<\/p>\n

“sharp” = spitz<\/em><\/p>\n

I like it when German words are actually shorter:
\n“the lid of a barrel” = einen Fassdeckel<\/em><\/p>\n

“rocking” = wiegt<\/em><\/p>\n

“Ancestors” = Ahnen<\/em><\/p>\n

“But what ails her?” = Doch was ist ihr Leiden?<\/em><\/p>\n

“heartsick” = Liebeskummer<\/em><\/p>\n

“can’t wrap my thoughts around” = bleibt mir verborgen<\/em> (“remains hidden from me”)<\/p>\n

“a man from legend” = sagenhafter Mann<\/em><\/p>\n

“squinting” = geblinzelt<\/em><\/p>\n

“spooks” = erschrickt<\/em><\/p>\n

“hooked in the chimney” = im Schornstein tobt<\/em><\/p>\n

“whining” = knarrt<\/em><\/p>\n

“crawled” = rutschte<\/em><\/p>\n

“clutched” = umklammerte<\/em><\/p>\n

“tethered goat” = angepflockte Ziege<\/em><\/p>\n

“She made my blood shiver.” = Mein Blut erschauerte.<\/em><\/p>\n

“glimpse her soul” = auf die Seele erhascht<\/em><\/p>\n

“tired from shaking” = ersch\u00f6pft vom Zittern<\/em><\/p>\n
