That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children&#8217;s books.  Okay, really it&#8217;s way past time.  I got called in to work this afternoon, so I didn&#8217;t have a chance to start this until late.  So how about a really short one, just looking at a little bit of my stand-by, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/order_of_odd_fish.html\">The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\">Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=22492\">Last time<\/a>, we left off on page 193, which is <em>Seite 244 auf Deutsch<\/em>.  We ended with a fairly dramatic sentence, so this week let&#8217;s begin with the next one, also dramatic:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jo didn&#8217;t even have time to scream before another tentacle pushed into her mouth.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Jo kam nicht einmal dazu, zu schreien, weil ein weiterer Tentakel sich \u00fcber ihren Mund legte.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This one&#8217;s not as catchy:<br \/>\n&#8220;She turned, kicked, and struggled&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Sie drehte sich um, trat zu und wehrte sich<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;something soft and gooey&#8221; = <em>etwas Weichem, Klebrigem<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;bag of jelly&#8221; = <em>Beutel mit Wackelpudding<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;burst with a liquid noise&#8221; = <em>mit einem fl\u00fcssigen Knall platzte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;went limp&#8221; = <em>wurden schlaff<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Her skin was pocked with little welts from the suckers.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Auf ihrer Haut hatten sich kleine Blasen von den Saugn\u00e4pfen gebildet.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;injuries&#8221; = <em>Verletzungen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;reins&#8221; = <em>Z\u00fcgeln<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is so good it has to be repeated from last time.<br \/>\n&#8220;Apology Gun&#8221; = <em>Entschuldigungspistole<\/em><br \/>\n(I&#8217;m happy.  I was able to spell that out without referring back to the book.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;cruel&#8221; = <em>Grausamkeit<\/em> (&#8220;cruelty&#8221;; &#8220;grayness&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;flipped&#8221; = <em>kippte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;squealing lizard-dogs&#8221; = <em>jaulenden Echsenhunde<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;limping&#8221; = <em>humpelnden<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;bristly&#8221; = <em>struppig<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;to throw away&#8221; = <em>vergeuden<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Her lips wavered on the edge of a sneer&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Sie verzog h\u00f6hnisch die Lippen<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;She made scornful the lips&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Also not as catchy:<br \/>\n&#8220;You don&#8217;t have the guts.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>F\u00fcr so etwas hast du nicht genug Mumm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;anticipation&#8221; = <em>erwartungsvoll<\/em> (&#8220;waiting-full&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fiona sensed the weakness&#8221; = <em>Fiona sp\u00fcrte ihre Schw\u00e4che<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;an almost inaudible <em>bip<\/em>.&#8221; = <em>einem fast unh\u00f6rbaren Ploppen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;angry bellow&#8221; = <em>w\u00fctenden Br\u00fcllen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;surrounded by the purple-cloaked, yellow-scarf-wearing, steel-goggled squires&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>von violet gekleideten, mit gelben Schals geschm\u00fcckten und st\u00e4hlernen Brillen gesch\u00fctzten Knappen umgeben<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all I have time for tonight!
