It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books. Tonight I’m going to again look at Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em> by James Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Last time<\/a>, we left off on page 195 in the English version, and Seite 247 auf Deutsch.<\/em> Jo is in a tight spot, surrounded by Wormbeards (Wurmb\u00e4rte<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Oh, it starts right off with a nice one:
\n“deafening roar” = ohrenbet\u00e4ubendes Br\u00fcllen<\/em>
\n(“ears-numbing bellow”)<\/p>\n

“and a powerful force knocked everyone on their backs”
\n= und eine ungeheuerliche Kraft schleuderte alle zu Boden, wo sie r\u00fccklings landeten<\/em>
\n(“and a monstrous force hurled all to the ground, where they backwards landed”)<\/p>\n

“heightening howls” = gellenden Heulen<\/em><\/p>\n

“tossed around” = herumgeschleudert<\/em><\/p>\n

Fun to say:
\n“paper dolls” = Papierpuppen<\/em><\/p>\n

“barking and shrieking” = kl\u00e4fften und heulen<\/em><\/p>\n

“fences and walls” = Z\u00e4une und W\u00e4nde<\/em><\/p>\n

“to throw off the lizard-dogs” = um die Echsenhunde abzusch\u00fctteln<\/em><\/p>\n

“A lizard-dog’s jaw nipped at her thigh” = Ein Echsenhund schnappte nach ihrer Wade<\/em><\/p>\n

“East Squeamings” = Ost-Heikel<\/em> (“East Squeamish”)<\/p>\n

Interesting. In the fish market, the translator translated “squishy blobs” with one word: Quallen<\/em>, which means “jellyfish.” That’s probably what they were?<\/p>\n

“slimy stones” = glitschigen Steinen<\/em><\/p>\n

“crashing through the stalls” = durch die Buden krachten<\/em><\/p>\n

“reckless glee” = r\u00fccksichtslosem Eifer<\/em><\/p>\n

“hissing smoke” = zischte und qualmte<\/em> (“hisses and smokes”)<\/p>\n

“swinging clubs” = Kn\u00fcppel swingend<\/em><\/p>\n

“surrounded” = umzingelt<\/em><\/p>\n

“whirled and yanked” = herumgewirbelt und herumgezerrt<\/em><\/p>\n

“roiling crowd” = keuchende Menge<\/em> (“coughing mass”)<\/p>\n

I like that there’s a word for this:
\n“mask of scabs” = Schuppenmaske<\/em><\/p>\n

“riot” = Aufruhr<\/em><\/p>\n

“cobbled” = gepflasterte<\/em><\/p>\n

“half-assembled” = zerlegte<\/em> (Google translates this word as “decomposed.”)<\/p>\n

This is fun:
\n“Woo!” = Juhu!<\/em><\/p>\n

“a gargantuan, flapping, snorting, screeching bird” = ein riesiger flatternder, schnaubender, kreischender Vogel<\/em><\/p>\n

“got up” = aufgerappelt<\/em><\/p>\n

“unreliable weapons” = unzuverl\u00e4ssigen Waffen<\/em><\/p>\n

“cheeky” = hinterh\u00e4ltig<\/em> (“underhanded”)<\/p>\n

“lost causes” = aussichtlose Aufgaben<\/em><\/p>\n

And, with lost causes, we wrap up Chapter Fifteen! Juhu!<\/em><\/p>\n

Now you know that many more useful phrases in German! You know just what to say if you see someone with a Schuppenmaske<\/em> or you’re in a situation where you need um die Echsenhunde abzusch\u00fctteln<\/em>.<\/p>\n
