That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children&#8217;s books.  Tonight I&#8217;m going to again look at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\">Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/order_of_odd_fish.html\">The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Sonderlinge-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Sonderlinge-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Sonderlinge 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22954\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Sonderlinge-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Sonderlinge-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=22740\">Last time<\/a>, we left off on page 195 in the English version, and <em>Seite 247 auf Deutsch.<\/em>  Jo is in a tight spot, surrounded by Wormbeards (<em>Wurmb\u00e4rte<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Oh, it starts right off with a nice one:<br \/>\n&#8220;deafening roar&#8221; = <em>ohrenbet\u00e4ubendes Br\u00fcllen<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;ears-numbing bellow&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;and a powerful force knocked everyone on their backs&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>und eine ungeheuerliche Kraft schleuderte alle zu Boden, wo sie r\u00fccklings landeten<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;and a monstrous force hurled all to the ground, where they backwards landed&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;heightening howls&#8221; = <em>gellenden Heulen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;tossed around&#8221; = <em>herumgeschleudert<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fun to say:<br \/>\n&#8220;paper dolls&#8221; = <em>Papierpuppen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;barking and shrieking&#8221; = <em>kl\u00e4fften und heulen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;fences and walls&#8221; = <em>Z\u00e4une und W\u00e4nde<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;to throw off the lizard-dogs&#8221; = <em>um die Echsenhunde abzusch\u00fctteln<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lizard-dog&#8217;s jaw nipped at her thigh&#8221; = <em>Ein Echsenhund schnappte nach ihrer Wade<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;East Squeamings&#8221; = <em>Ost-Heikel<\/em>  (&#8220;East Squeamish&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Interesting.  In the fish market, the translator translated &#8220;squishy blobs&#8221; with one word: <em>Quallen<\/em>, which means &#8220;jellyfish.&#8221;  That&#8217;s probably what they were?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;slimy stones&#8221; = <em>glitschigen Steinen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;crashing through the stalls&#8221; = <em>durch die Buden krachten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;reckless glee&#8221; = <em>r\u00fccksichtslosem Eifer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;hissing smoke&#8221; = <em>zischte und qualmte<\/em> (&#8220;hisses and smokes&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;swinging clubs&#8221; = <em>Kn\u00fcppel swingend<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;surrounded&#8221; = <em>umzingelt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;whirled and yanked&#8221; = <em>herumgewirbelt und herumgezerrt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;roiling crowd&#8221; = <em>keuchende Menge<\/em> (&#8220;coughing mass&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>I like that there&#8217;s a word for this:<br \/>\n&#8220;mask of scabs&#8221; = <em>Schuppenmaske<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;riot&#8221; = <em>Aufruhr<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;cobbled&#8221; = <em>gepflasterte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;half-assembled&#8221; = <em>zerlegte<\/em> (Google translates this word as &#8220;decomposed.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>This is fun:<br \/>\n&#8220;Woo!&#8221; = <em>Juhu!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;a gargantuan, flapping, snorting, screeching bird&#8221; = <em>ein riesiger flatternder, schnaubender, kreischender Vogel<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;got up&#8221; = <em>aufgerappelt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;unreliable weapons&#8221; = <em>unzuverl\u00e4ssigen Waffen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;cheeky&#8221; = <em>hinterh\u00e4ltig<\/em> (&#8220;underhanded&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;lost causes&#8221; = <em>aussichtlose Aufgaben<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And, with lost causes, we wrap up Chapter Fifteen!  <em>Juhu!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now you know that many more useful phrases in German!
