It’s time for Sonderling Sunday! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books.<\/p>\n

Tonight I’m going back to Book of a Thousand Days<\/em>, by Shannon Hale, Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Last time I looked at this book<\/a>, I was on Day 31, which is page 26 in the English version, and Seite 37 auf Deutsch.<\/em><\/p>\n

I think of Sonderling Sunday as a silly phrase book. Imagine coming across these in a phrase book. You know<\/em> they’re useful phrases, since they’ve actually gotten used in a book!<\/p>\n

It begins:
\n“A few minutes ago, we heard a voice.”
\n= Vor wenigen Minuten h\u00f6rten wir eine Stimme.<\/em><\/p>\n

“hiding her face in my neck” = barg das Gesicht an meinem Hals<\/em><\/p>\n

“I gasped.” = Ich rang um luft.<\/em> (“I struggled for breath.”)<\/p>\n

“the flap” = die Klappe<\/em><\/p>\n

“I fetched a wooden spoon and lodged it against the flap to hold it open.”
\n= Ich klemmte einen Holzl\u00f6ffel in die Klappe, damit sie offen blieb.<\/em><\/p>\n

“started to pace and fret and rub her head”
\n= tigerte umher, rang die H\u00e4nde und raufte sich die Haare<\/em><\/p>\n

“Say you are me.” = Behaupte, du w\u00e4rst ich.<\/em><\/p>\n

“shook like a rabbit” = bebte wie ein Kaninchen<\/em><\/p>\n

“her voice was hard and full of the knowledge that she’s gentry”

“loads of food” = massenweise Lebensmittel<\/em><\/p>\n

“salted mutton” = gep\u00f6kelten Hammel<\/em><\/p>\n

“I’m relieved.” = Das tr\u00f6stet mich.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Feeling as though I had swallowed a great lump of knotted rope”
\n= Ich f\u00fchlte mich, als h\u00e4tte ich ein gro\u00dfes St\u00fcck verknotetes Tau verschluckt<\/em><\/p>\n

“clank shut” = scheppernd zufiel<\/em><\/p>\n
