That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children&#8217;s books.  And <a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=25064\">my comments work again<\/a> this time!<\/p>\n<p>This week, it&#8217;s back to my stand-by, the book that inspired me to start Sonderling Sunday, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\">Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a>, otherwise known as <em>The Order of Odd-fish.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sonderlinge-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sonderlinge-2.jpg\" alt=\"Sonderlinge 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25084\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sonderlinge-2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sonderlinge-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last time, we left off right around the halfway point, on page 208 in the English version, and <em>Seite 262 auf Deutsch.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Just to set the stage, I&#8217;m going to write out the whole first paragraph of this section.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Jo and Ian searched the neighborhood, but they didn&#8217;t really know what they were looking for.  It wasn&#8217;t clear what &#8220;Duddler Yarue&#8221; would look like, and anyway, the streets were almost deserted.  After a half hour of wandering, Jo despaired of ever making any headway, and was ready to give up when they saw an effeminate boy smoking a cigarette on the corner.  He watched Jo and Ian idly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Auf Deutsch:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Jo und Ian suchten das ganze Viertel ab, aber sie wussten nicht einmal genau, wonach sie eigentlich suchen sollten.  Es war nicht klar, wie dieser \u00bbDuddler Yarue\u00ab eigentlich ausschaute, und au\u00dferdem waren die Stra\u00dfen beinahe vollkommen menschenleer.  Nachdem sie eine halbe Stunde herumgeirrt waren, glaubte Jo nicht mehr daran, dass sie noch irgendetwas erreichen w\u00fcrden.  Sie wollte schon aufgeben, als sie einen etwas affektierten Jungen an der Ecke stehen sah, der eine Zigarette rauchte.  Er beobachtete Jo und Ian gelangweilt.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;suspicious&#8221; = <em>Verd\u00e4chtiges<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;clue&#8221; = <em>Spur<\/em> (&#8220;trail&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;to boil over&#8221; = <em>die Beherrschung zu verlieren<\/em> (&#8220;the mastery to lose&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;rude&#8221; = <em>unh\u00f6flich<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;street wisdom&#8221; = <em>Stra\u00dfenweisheit<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;some guy&#8221; = <em>irgendein Bursche<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;snapped his fingers&#8221; = <em>schnippte mit den Fingern<\/em>  (I just like that one.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;startled and a little pleased&#8221; = <em>erschrocken und zugegebenerma\u00dfen auch ein bisschen erfreut<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;frightened and admittedly also a little bit pleased&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;the sights&#8221; = <em>Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;secret places&#8221; = <em>geheime Orte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t want you to miss it.&#8221; = <em>Ich m\u00f6chte nicht, dass du das vers\u00e4umst.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;rather enjoying Ian&#8217;s jealousy&#8221; = <em>genoss Ians Eifersucht<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;teetered back and forth&#8221; = <em>z\u00f6gerte unschl\u00fcssig<\/em> (&#8220;hesitated indecisively&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;turnstile&#8221; = <em>Drehkreuz<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ian bought three tokens and went through properly.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Der kaufte drei M\u00fcnzen und warf sie ordnungsgem\u00e4\u00df in den Schlitz.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;He bought three coins and threw them properly in the slot.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s it for tonight!  A short one, but it&#8217;s nice to get back in the swing of it.
