{"id":258,"date":"2008-11-10T23:55:49","date_gmt":"2008-11-11T03:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/2008\/11\/10\/review-of-among-the-hidden-by-margaret-peterson-haddix\/"},"modified":"2008-11-19T22:27:31","modified_gmt":"2008-11-20T02:27:31","slug":"review-of-among-the-hidden-by-margaret-peterson-haddix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=258","title":{"rendered":"Review of Among the Hidden, by Margaret Peterson Haddix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image264\" height=\"110\" alt=\"among_the_hidden.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/among_the_hidden.jpg\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Among the Hidden<\/em><\/p>\n<p>by Margaret Peterson Haddix<\/p>\n<p>Book #1 of the <em>Shadow Children <\/em>series<\/p>\n<p>Aladdin Paperbacks, 2000.\u00a0 153 pages.<\/p>\n<p>I finally read the first book in this series, having completely forgotten that I read the second book already, <em>Among the Imposters <\/em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/ChildrensFiction\/amongimpostors.html\">http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/ChildrensFiction\/amongimpostors.html<\/a>\u00a0).<\/p>\n<p>This book sets the stage for the series.\u00a0 Luke lives on a farm.\u00a0 He&#8217;s never gone off the farm or seen anyone outside his family, but he was able to help with chores &#8212; until the woods got cut down and a housing development was built behind their house.<\/p>\n<p>Now Luke must not even go in a room with an open window, for fear someone might see him.\u00a0 Luke is the third child in his family, and in this future society, third children are illegal.<\/p>\n<p>However, Luke finds a way to look outside and watch his new, rich neighbors.\u00a0 When one family &#8212; mother, father, and two children &#8212; have all left the house, he notices someone else still moving around.\u00a0 Could there be another third child living in hiding.<\/p>\n<p>I read this book with our Homeschoolers&#8217; Book Group at the library.\u00a0 The kids&#8217; reaction was mixed.\u00a0 Most didn&#8217;t like the ending, which sets up the rest of the series.\u00a0 Still, Margaret Peterson Haddix does a good job of quickly setting the stage and helping us understand this alternate world.\u00a0 The suspense is high as we worry with Luke that he will get caught &#8212; or else never get to go out of the house again.<\/p>\n<p>This book was read by one of the teachers in the local middle school, and then many kids came to the library looking for more in the series.\u00a0 It won&#8217;t hook every kid, but those who get hooked want to find out what happens next.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0689824750\/sonderbooksco-20\" target=\"outside\"><font color=\"#0b76ae\">Buy from Amazon.com<\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Find this\u00a0review on the main site at: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Childrens_Fiction\/among_the_hidden.html\">www.sonderbooks.com\/Childrens_Fiction\/among_the_hidden.html<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix Book #1 of the Shadow Children series Aladdin Paperbacks, 2000.\u00a0 153 pages.
