It’s time for Sonderling Sunday, that time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books!<\/p>\n

Okay, it’s a little late for it tonight, but hey, it’s Daylight Savings Time, so my body doesn’t realize that I should be tired. I’ll try for a short one.<\/p>\n

And it’s time to go back to one of my favorite English books, Book of a Thousand Days<\/em>, by Shannon Hale, >Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/em>, with the so gorgeous German cover.<\/p>\n

Last time<\/a> (which I can’t believe was a year ago!), I left off before Day 32, which starts on page 31 in the English edition, and Seite 42<\/em> in the German edition.<\/p>\n

Right away, there’s something that’s more easily said in English:
\n“whisper-shouting”
\n= fl\u00fcsterte und rief zur gleichen Zeit<\/em>
\n(“whispered and shouted at the same time”)<\/p>\n

This is fun in German:
\n“mending a stocking” = stopfte einen Strumpf<\/em><\/p>\n

It’s interesting when onomatopoeia is done so differently, but it works:
\n“Rap, rap, rap” = Tack, tack, tack.<\/em><\/p>\n

“rotten” = abscheulich<\/em><\/p>\n

“palms” = Handfl\u00e4chen<\/em> (“Hand surfaces”)<\/p>\n

“wooden spoon” = Holzl\u00f6ffel<\/em><\/p>\n

“puddle of moonlight” = Lache Mondlicht<\/em><\/p>\n

“double stitched” = doppelt gen\u00e4htem<\/em><\/p>\n

“I knew he was teasing me” = ich wusste, dass er mich nur neckte<\/em><\/p>\n

“friendly insult” = wohlgesonnene Beleidigung<\/em> (Google: “sympathetic insult”)<\/p>\n

“sturdy ankles” = stramme Kn\u00f6chel<\/em><\/p>\n

“brush” (for writing) = Pinsel<\/em> (Ah! I just learned where the word “pencil” came from.)<\/p>\n

“wistful” = wehm\u00fctig<\/em><\/p>\n

“twisting and floating” = zuckend und schwebend<\/em><\/p>\n

And that’s all for tonight! I finished Day 32.<\/p>\n

But what useful things we’ve learned! After all, who would want to travel in Germany without knowing how to say “bodiless piglet”?<\/p>\n
