It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a> – that time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books.<\/p>\n

Today I’m back to the book I love so much in English, Shannon Hale<\/a>‘s Book of a Thousand Days<\/a><\/em>, Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"Buch_Tausend_Tage\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Last time<\/a> I looked at this book, I left off ready to begin Tag 33<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This is a random sentence, early on, that I think could be handy to know:
\n“Or was it right to let her sleep?”
\n= Oder war es richtig, sie schlafen zu lassen?<\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s another good sentence:
\n“You’re an antelope who bounds through life.”
\n= Ihr seid eine Antilope, die durchs Leben h\u00fcpft.<\/em><\/p>\n

“feverish hot” = lichterloh<\/em><\/p>\n

And who knows but when you might need to say this?
\n“Your ankles are skinnier than a jackrabbit’s ribs.”
\n= Eure Kn\u00f6chel magerer sind als die Rippen eines Hasen.<\/em><\/p>\n

“trying to hold in the laugh made me snort like a camel”
\n= das unterdr\u00fcckte Lachen brach sich in einem kamelartigen Schnauben Bahn<\/em><\/p>\n

I like the way this sounds:
\n“didn’t want to wake the guards”
\n=die Wachen nicht wecken wollte<\/em><\/p>\n

“How my side ached!”
\n= Ich hatte solches Seitenstechen!<\/em><\/p>\n

“laughing with” = herumzualbern<\/em> (Google: “fool around”)<\/p>\n

“my skin tingling” = einem Prickeln auf der Haut<\/em><\/p>\n

There’s a special word for tears of laughter:
\n“I’d wiped the tears from my face”
\n= ich mir die Lachtr\u00e4nen abgewischt hatte<\/em>
\n(“I from myself the laugh-tears wiped had.”)<\/p>\n

“wild dog” = Wildhund<\/em> (Nothing surprising there, but always fun to say.)<\/p>\n

“crazy” = wahnwitzig<\/em><\/p>\n

I always like the long words:
\n“sword practice” = Schwertkampftraining<\/em><\/p>\n

“swimming while dry” = trockenen K\u00f6rpers schwimmen<\/em><\/p>\n

“shy” = sch\u00fcchtern<\/em><\/p>\n

“ease suffering” = lindern Leiden<\/em><\/p>\n

“resting my head on my hands” = st\u00fctzte den Kopf in die H\u00e4nde<\/em><\/p>\n

“squinting” = mit zusammengekniffenen Augen<\/em><\/p>\n

“something furry that mewed”
\n= etwas Flauschiges Maunzendes<\/em><\/p>\n

“riverbed clay” = Lehm im Flussbett<\/em><\/p>\n

And this one rhymes:
\n“heartache” = Herzschmerz<\/em><\/p>\n

That’s it for Day 33. May you never know Herzschmerz<\/em> and may the only tears you know be Lachtr\u00e4nen.<\/em><\/p>\n
