That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children&#8217;s books.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\" alt=\"Sonderlinge3\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Sonderlinge3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Sonderlinge3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been <a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=27142\">awhile<\/a> since I&#8217;ve done a post, with no good reason but your basic busyness.  So I&#8217;m happy to get back to it tonight.  And it&#8217;s the turn of my stand-by, the truest Sonderbook of them all, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\">Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a>, the translation of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/order_of_odd_fish.html\">The Order of Odd-fish<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Last time I visited this book, I finished with &#8220;the picture of happiness,&#8221; <em>die Verk\u00f6rperung von Gl\u00fcckseligkeit<\/em>, which is on page 228, <em>Seite<\/em> 287.<\/p>\n<p>As always, I love learning how to translate James Kennedy&#8217;s disgust-inducing prose.  \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;a dingy, nameless place&#8221; = <em>ein schmuddeliger namenloser Ort<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;its walls yellowed with decades of smoke and stains&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Die W\u00e4nde waren von jahrzehntealtem Rauch und Schmutz vergilbt.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;an ornery dog&#8221; = <em>ein \u00fcbellauniger Hund<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;godawful&#8221; = <em>einfach schrecklich<\/em> (&#8220;simply horrible&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;worry&#8221; = <em>Kopfzerbrechen<\/em> (&#8220;head-breaking&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;corner booth&#8221; = <em>Ecknische<\/em><br \/>\n(Yes!  This is now exactly what I&#8217;m going to name my corner cubicle!)<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a handy phrase to know:<br \/>\n&#8220;scrawled-upon napkins&#8221; = <em>vollgekritzelten Servietten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We can say this much more concisely:<br \/>\n&#8220;snaky&#8221; = <em>schlangenartiges<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;brushed off&#8221; = <em>freiklopfen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;thinking about it too much&#8221; = <em>zu viel dar\u00fcber nachgegr\u00fcbelt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I mean, who puts words like these together but James Kennedy?  This is why this book got me going with these handy-dandy phrases you didn&#8217;t know you wanted to know.<br \/>\n&#8220;squeaky whisper&#8221; = <em>quietschendes Fl\u00fcstern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Again, we&#8217;re a bit more concise:<br \/>\n&#8220;Right now!&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>In ebendiesem Augenblick!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;or worse&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>m\u00f6glicherweise geschieht sogar Schlimmeres<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nora had gone too far.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Jetzt war Nora eindeutig \u00fcbergeschnappt.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;Now was Nora undoubtedly over-snapped.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;vindicated&#8221; = <em>ger\u00e4cht<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;headline&#8221; = <em>Schlagzeile<\/em> (&#8220;Strike-line&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>They kept all the headlines alliterative.  Here&#8217;s the shortest:<br \/>\n&#8220;CHATTERBOX CHASTENED&#8221; = <em>PLAUDERTASCHE PLATTGEMACHT<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;Chatterbox flattened&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;superlative distinction&#8221; = <em>un\u00fcbertrefflicher Ehre<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;swaying tassels&#8221; = <em>wippenden Quasten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I like this one:<br \/>\n&#8220;a wee tot&#8221; = <em>ein Knirps<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And let&#8217;s finish off &#8220;with delirious joy&#8221; = <em>freudetrunken<\/em> (&#8220;joy-drunk&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m truly jazzed about finding an appropriate name for my cubicle at work (The <em>Ecknische<\/em>), though perhaps not quite <em>freudetrunken<\/em>.
