{"id":275,"date":"2008-12-05T00:28:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-05T04:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/2008\/12\/05\/review-of-beastly-by-alex-flinn\/"},"modified":"2009-01-20T16:54:40","modified_gmt":"2009-01-20T20:54:40","slug":"review-of-beastly-by-alex-flinn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=275","title":{"rendered":"Review of Beastly by Alex Flinn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image280\" height=\"206\" alt=\"beastly.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/beastly.jpg\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Beastly<\/em><\/p>\n<p>by Alex Flinn<\/p>\n<p>HarperTeen, New York, 2007.\u00a0 304 pages.<\/p>\n<p>Starred review.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexflinn.com\/\">http:\/\/www.alexflinn.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harperteen.com\/\">http:\/\/www.harperteen.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a wonderful retelling of <em>Beauty and the Beast, <\/em>set in modern-day New York City, told from the beast&#8217;s perspective.<\/p>\n<p>I just saw the <em>Twilight <\/em>movie, and now I&#8217;m going to recommend <em>Beastly <\/em>to people who like the movie but don&#8217;t want to wait for 900 people on the request list for <em>Twilight.\u00a0 <\/em>Although there are no vampires, <em>Beastly <\/em>has the same flavor of supernatural romance, told with beautiful writing.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Kingsbury knows he is the sure winner for ninth-grade prince of the spring dance court.\u00a0 No one can compete with his looks and his dad&#8217;s cash.\u00a0 When a creepy goth girl challenges the whole idea of voting based on looks, he reacts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She pissed me off, so I jumped on her.\u00a0 &#8216;If someone&#8217;s so smart, they&#8217;d figure out how to <em>get <\/em>better-looking.\u00a0 You could lose weight, get plastic surgery, even get your face scraped and your teeth bleached.&#8217;\u00a0 I emphasized the <em>you <\/em>in the sentence, so she&#8217;d know I meant her and not just some general sort of <em>you.\u00a0 &#8216;<\/em>My dad&#8217;s a network news guy.\u00a0 He says people shouldn&#8217;t have to look at ugly people.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Later, Kyle thinks of a way to get her back for her disturbing words.\u00a0 A way to utterly humiliate her at the spring dance.<\/p>\n<p>The author convinces us that he completely deserves\u00a0his curse:\u00a0 to become a beast until he finds &#8220;someone willing to look beyond your hideousness and see some good in you, something to love.\u00a0 If you will love her in return and if she will kiss you to prove it, the spell will be lifted, and you will be your handsome self again.\u00a0 If not, you&#8217;ll stay a beast forever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When Kyle&#8217;s Dad is convinced that doctors can&#8217;t cure him, he rents Kyle a house in another part of the city with a housekeeper and a tutor, with thick shutters against the outside.\u00a0 Kyle\u00a0slowly shows the beginnings of transformation as\u00a0he learns to grow roses and loves them.\u00a0 So then when a junkie crashes into his greenhouse&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>I love the way Alex Flinn worked in all the elements of the traditional tale.\u00a0 I also loved the believable way she showed us Kyle changing, transforming.\u00a0 And of course there&#8217;s the wonderful blooming of true love.<\/p>\n<p>Between all that drama, there are hilarious interludes of transcripts from a chat room, the Unexpected Changes chat group, hosted by Mr. Anderson.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a mermaid called SilentMaid, a former prince called Froggie, and someone called Grizzlyguy who&#8217;s met these two girls, Rose Red and Snow White (not\u00a0*that* Snow White).<\/p>\n<p>All this adds up to a truly delightful book that I hope will become wildly popular with teens.\u00a0 And any adults who will admit to enjoying <em>Twilight, <\/em>let me urge you to give <em>Beastly <\/em>a try.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/006087418X\/sonderbooksco-20\" target=\"outside\">Buy from Amazon.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Find this review on the main site at:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/beastly.html\">www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/beastly.html<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beastly by Alex Flinn HarperTeen, New York, 2007.\u00a0 304 pages.
