It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books. Sort of a Traveler’s Phrasebook for Very Silly People.<\/p>\n

This week, I’m back to my stand-by, The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a>,<\/em> by James Kennedy<\/a>, the most Sonder<\/em> book of them all, Der Orden der seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a>.<\/em> However, it’s already quite late, so I’m promising myself I’ll stop after only a half-hour. Let’s see what we can find in that time.<\/p>\n

Last time, I left off on page 232, Seite 293.<\/em><\/p>\n

“forced” = gezwungen<\/em><\/p>\n

“the Hat of Honor” = dem Hut der Ehre<\/em><\/p>\n

I really think they left something out here:
\n“a prancing throng of cockroaches” = einer Horde Kakerlaken<\/em><\/p>\n

And these are just not as good either:
\n“dragon of deceit” = Drachen des Betrugs<\/em>
\n“kingdom of calumny” = K\u00f6nigreich der Verleumdung<\/em><\/p>\n

A phrase everyone should know:
\n“silly hat” = albernen Hut<\/em><\/p>\n

Oh, and you certainly want to be able to say this:
\n“We must be gracious in our victory.”
\n= Wir m\u00fcssen gro\u00dfz\u00fcgig sein in unserem Sieg.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nice long words for Aunt Lily’s research specialty:
\n“irregular contraptions” = unvorschriftsm\u00e4\u00dfige Apparaturen<\/em><\/p>\n

“scavenged appliances” = geweideter Ger\u00e4te<\/em><\/p>\n

“gears” = Zahnr\u00e4dern<\/em> (“tooth-wheels”)<\/p>\n

“spindles” = Spulen<\/em><\/p>\n

“homemade batteries” = selbst gemachten Batterien<\/em><\/p>\n

“bottles stuffed with nails and bolts and wires”
\n= Gl\u00e4sern mit N\u00e4geln, Dr\u00e4hten und Nieten<\/em><\/p>\n

Oops! My time’s up. I’m going to try to be good and stop while it is still Sunday.<\/p>\n
