It\u2019s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books. Sort of a Traveler\u2019s Phrasebook for Very Silly People.<\/p>\n

This week, I’m back to the book that inspired Sonderling Sunday, The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a>,<\/em> by James Kennedy<\/a>, the most Sonder<\/em> book of them all, Der Orden der seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

This is my first week back after two and a half weeks of vacation on the west coast (which was great!), so once again I’ll have to keep it short. But there’s enough time for a little fun.<\/p>\n

Last time<\/a> I left off on page 234 in the English edition, Seite 295 auf Deutsch<\/em>. I am in the middle of Chapter 18.<\/p>\n

The first sentence I had to look up in German reveals no surprise I didn’t understand it:
\nSir Alasdair \u00fcbte oben auf seinem Urk-ack.<\/em>
\n= “Sir Alasdair was practicing his urk-ack upstairs.”<\/p>\n

“stopped hammering, drilling, and sawing” = aufh\u00f6rten zu h\u00e4mmern, zu bohren oder zu s\u00e4gen<\/em><\/p>\n

Don’t you want to know how to say this?
\n“the mellow tones of the urk-ack”
\n= die sanften T\u00f6ne des Urk-ack<\/em><\/p>\n

I still like long German words:
\n“pounded up and down”
\n= hinauf- und hinunterpolterten<\/em><\/p>\n

“Inconvenience” = \u00c4rgernis<\/em><\/p>\n

This doesn’t sound like what it means:
\n“comfortable silence” = behagliches Schweigen<\/em><\/p>\n

“often distracted” = h\u00e4ufig abgelenkt<\/em><\/p>\n

“cot” = Pritsche<\/em><\/p>\n

I’m not sure why this place-name was translated this way:
\n“Snoodsbottom” = Bilgental<\/em><\/p>\n

“the important thing” = die Entscheidende<\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s a good one!
\n“hopping mad” = fuchsteufelswild<\/em><\/p>\n

“Girl Scout” = Pfadfinderin<\/em> (“pathfinder girl”)<\/p>\n

“brawl” = herumpr\u00fcgele<\/em><\/p>\n

Another good phrase to know:
\n“That all sounds grand” = Das klingt alles ganz gro\u00dfartig<\/em><\/p>\n

“bravely” = tapfer<\/em><\/p>\n

“etiquette” = Verhaltensregeln<\/em> (“behavior-rules”)<\/p>\n

And I like how this sounds:
\n“Aunt Lily raised an eyebrow.”
\n= Tante Lily hob die Brauen.<\/em><\/p>\n

And I have to list how the alliterative headlines were translated:<\/p>\n

“ELDERLY ELDRITCH EXILES EXONERATED!
\nEXUBERANT EX-EXPATRIATES EXULT!”
\n= EXIL ENDLICH EXTERMINIERT!
\nVERGN\u00dcGT VERBANNTE!<\/em><\/p>\n

“MAGNANIMOUS MAYOR MAKES MERCIFUL MOTION
\nMANDATING MURDER MATTER MENDED!”
\n= BARMHERZIGER B\u00dcRGERMEISTER BEENDET BANN
\nMORDVORWURF MAKULATUR<\/em><\/p>\n

“STRIKE FORCE STEADFASTLY SCORNED SURRENDER TO
\nSILENT SISTERS, SUBSEQUENTLY SUFFERED SEVERE SANCTION,
\nSENTENCE SINCE SUSPENDED.”

That’s all I have time for tonight! But it’s good to be back! I am h\u00e4ufig abgelenkt<\/em>, but die Entscheidende<\/em> is to get back to it!<\/p>\n
