That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books. Sort of a Traveler\u2019s Phrasebook for Very Silly People.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\" alt=\"Sonderlinge3\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28035\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Sonderlinge3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Sonderlinge3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week, I&#8217;m back to the book that inspired Sonderling Sunday, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/order_of_odd_fish.html\">The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a>,<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a>, the most <em>Sonder<\/em> book of them all, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\">Der Orden der seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is my first week back after two and a half weeks of vacation on the west coast (which was great!), so once again I&#8217;ll have to keep it short.  But there&#8217;s enough time for a little fun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=27559#comments\">Last time<\/a> I left off on page 234 in the English edition, <em>Seite 295 auf Deutsch<\/em>.  I am in the middle of Chapter 18.<\/p>\n<p>The first sentence I had to look up in German reveals no surprise I didn&#8217;t understand it:<br \/>\n<em>Sir Alasdair \u00fcbte oben auf seinem Urk-ack.<\/em><br \/>\n= &#8220;Sir Alasdair was practicing his urk-ack upstairs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;stopped hammering, drilling, and sawing&#8221; = <em>aufh\u00f6rten zu h\u00e4mmern, zu bohren oder zu s\u00e4gen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t you want to know how to say this?<br \/>\n&#8220;the mellow tones of the urk-ack&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>die sanften T\u00f6ne des Urk-ack<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I still like long German words:<br \/>\n&#8220;pounded up and down&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>hinauf- und hinunterpolterten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Inconvenience&#8221; = <em>\u00c4rgernis<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t sound like what it means:<br \/>\n&#8220;comfortable silence&#8221; = <em>behagliches Schweigen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;often distracted&#8221; = <em>h\u00e4ufig abgelenkt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;cot&#8221; = <em>Pritsche<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure why this place-name was translated this way:<br \/>\n&#8220;Snoodsbottom&#8221; = <em>Bilgental<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;the important thing&#8221; = <em>die Entscheidende<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a good one!<br \/>\n&#8220;hopping mad&#8221; = <em>fuchsteufelswild<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Girl Scout&#8221; = <em>Pfadfinderin<\/em> (&#8220;pathfinder girl&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;brawl&#8221; = <em>herumpr\u00fcgele<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another good phrase to know:<br \/>\n&#8220;That all sounds grand&#8221; = <em>Das klingt alles ganz gro\u00dfartig<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;bravely&#8221; = <em>tapfer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;etiquette&#8221; = <em>Verhaltensregeln<\/em> (&#8220;behavior-rules&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>And I like how this sounds:<br \/>\n&#8220;Aunt Lily raised an eyebrow.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Tante Lily hob die Brauen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And I have to list how the alliterative headlines were translated:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;ELDERLY ELDRITCH EXILES EXONERATED!<br \/>\nEXUBERANT EX-EXPATRIATES EXULT!&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>EXIL ENDLICH EXTERMINIERT!<br \/>\nVERGN\u00dcGT VERBANNTE!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;MAGNANIMOUS MAYOR MAKES MERCIFUL MOTION<br \/>\nMANDATING MURDER MATTER MENDED!&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>BARMHERZIGER B\u00dcRGERMEISTER BEENDET BANN<br \/>\nMORDVORWURF MAKULATUR<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;STRIKE FORCE STEADFASTLY SCORNED SURRENDER TO<br \/>\nSILENT SISTERS, SUBSEQUENTLY SUFFERED SEVERE SANCTION,<br \/>\nSENTENCE SINCE SUSPENDED.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>STREITMACHT VERH\u00d6HNT STUMME SCHWESTERN<br \/>\nANSCHLIESSEND ABER ABGEFAHRENER \u00c4RGER<br \/>\nSANKTIONEN SEITDEM SUSPENDIERT<\/em><br \/>\n(Not bad.)<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all I have time for tonight! But it&#8217;s good to be back!
