It\u2019s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books. Sort of a Traveler\u2019s Phrasebook for Very Silly People.<\/p>\n

\"Sonderlinge<\/a><\/p>\n

This week, I’m back to my stand-by, the ever-so-Sonder<\/em> Der Orden der seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a> — The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Last time, we left off with some alliterative headlines. Jo has learned that Aunt Lily is no longer exiled!<\/p>\n

We’re on page 236 in the original English version, Seite 298 auf Deutsch<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As usual, we’ll look at whatever interesting phrases catch my eye. Trust me, this won’t give away the plot — though I do hope it intrigues a few people.<\/p>\n

Let’s start with the key word:
\n“exiled” = verbannt<\/em><\/p>\n

As in:
\n“This means you’re not exiled any more?”
\n= Das bedeutet, du bist nicht mehr verbannt?<\/em><\/p>\n

May you never need to use this sentence:
\n“The mayor’s dropped the case.”
\n= Der B\u00fcrgermeister hat den Fall eingestellt.<\/em><\/p>\n

But this is a good phrase to know:
\n“For now, at least.” = Jedenfalls f\u00fcrs Erste.<\/em><\/p>\n

Oh, I like this word!
\n“nap” = Mittagsschl\u00e4fchen<\/em> (“midday-little-sleep”)<\/p>\n

Another useful phrase:
\n“Are you crazy?” = Bist du verr\u00fcckt geworden?<\/em><\/p>\n

“she whispered fiercely” = fl\u00fcsterte sie hitzig<\/em><\/p>\n

Oo, I like how this sounds in German:
\n“That the Silent Sisters have gone away?”
\n= Dass die Stummen Schwestern verschwunden w\u00e4ren?<\/em><\/p>\n

“They are all on the move.”
\n= Sie alle sind sehr umtriebig.<\/em>
\n(“They all are very go-getting.”)<\/p>\n

I hope you don’t need this sentence:
\n“But I’m living a lie!”
\n= Aber ich lebe in einer L\u00fcge!<\/em><\/p>\n

I’ve mentioned this before, but still like knowing the word:
\n“Inconvenience” = \u00c4rgernis<\/em><\/p>\n

“people who’ve been sticking their necks out for you”
\n= die Leute, die f\u00fcr dich ihren Hals riskiert haben<\/em><\/p>\n

Again, I hope you don’t have reason to say this, but best to be prepared:
\n“It’s the worst possible plan!”
\n= Es ist sogar der schlimmstm\u00f6gliche Plan!<\/em><\/p>\n

Think about the situation where you might want to say this!
\n“prying at a mishmash of intertwined mechanisms.”
\n= w\u00fchlte in einem Haufen miteinander verhakter mechanischer Teile.<\/em>
\n(“rummaged in a heap together entangled mechanical parts.”)<\/p>\n

I always like James Kennedy’s lists of interesting phrases:
\n“Months of silence, of awkward pauses, of avoiding the topic broke down.”
\n= All die Monate des Schweigens, der verlegenen Pausen, der Vermeidung dieses Themas forderten ihren Tribut.<\/em>
\n(“All these months of silence, the embarrassed pauses, the avoidance of these themes demanded their tribute.”)<\/p>\n

“the least thing” = der kleinste Kleinigkeit<\/em><\/p>\n

“Her face had warped and sagged.”
\n= Ihr Gesicht war verzerrt und eingefallen.<\/em><\/p>\n

I like this word:
\n“Doorknob” = T\u00fcrknauft<\/em><\/p>\n

“escape” = Fluchtweg<\/em> (“flight-way”)<\/p>\n

“sheepish” = sch\u00fcchtern<\/em><\/p>\n

“No hard feelings?” = Kein Groll?<\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s a grand collection of long words!
\n“Minor difference of interpretation of city ordinances.”
\n= Das waren nur unbedeutende Meinungsverschiedenheiten hinsichtlich der Interpretation der Stadtverordnungen<\/em><\/p>\n

And we’ll finish with the end of the scene:
\n“Jo left the room as quickly as possible and didn’t look back.”
\n= Doch Jo velie\u00df den Raum so schnell wie m\u00f6glich und blickte nicht zur\u00fcck.<\/em><\/p>\n

If you are ever verbannt<\/em>, I hope your exile will be lifted quickly. Bis bald!<\/em><\/p>\n
