That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of Children\u2019s Books, sort of a Silly Phrasebook for Travelers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Pu_der_Bar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Pu_der_Bar.jpg\" alt=\"Pu_der_Bar\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Pu_der_Bar.jpg 600w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Pu_der_Bar-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week, I&#8217;m going back to one of my favorite books, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/ChildrensFiction\/winniethepooh.html\">Winnie-the-Pooh<\/a><\/em>, by A. A. Milne, otherwise known as <em>Pu der B\u00e4r.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=25767\">Last time we looked at <em>Pu<\/em><\/a>, we finished Chapter 2, about Pooh getting stuck in a very tight place.  So this time we will cover Chapter 3, &#8220;In Which Pooh and Piglet Go Hunting and Nearly Catch a Woozle&#8221; = <em>In welchem Pu und Ferkel auf die Jagd gehen und beinahe ein Wuschel fangen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Oh!  This is my opportunity to see what the translator did with the elaborate joke about Piglet&#8217;s Uncle &#8220;Trespassers William.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;TRESPASSERS W&#8221; = <em>BETRETEN V<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a pretty straight translation, just using a different name.<\/p>\n<p>For research, I used Google Translate to see what &#8220;Trespassers will be prosecuted.&#8221; would be in German.  Google came up with <em>Strafrechtlich verfolgt wird.<\/em>  Maybe &#8220;v&#8221; is for <em>verfolgt<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;it was short for Trespassers Will&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>es sei die Abk\u00fcrzung von Betreten Vic<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;which was short of Trespassers William&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>welches die Abk\u00fcrzung von Betreten Victor sei.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And his grandfather had had two names in case he lost one&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Und sein Gro\u00dfvater habe zwei Namen gehabt, f\u00fcr den Fall, dass er mal einen verl\u00f6re<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Trespassers after an uncle, and William after Trespassers.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Betreten nach einem Onkel und Victor nach Betreten.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;carelessly&#8221; = <em>leichtsinnig<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A good phrase to know:<br \/>\n&#8220;Well, there you are, that proves it.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Siehst du, das beweist es ja.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pooh was walking round and round in a circle&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Pu ging immer im Kreis herum<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;tracking&#8221; = <em>sp\u00fcre<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is straightforward, but I like it:<br \/>\n&#8220;That&#8217;s just what I ask myself.  I ask myself, What?&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Genau das frage ich mich auch.  Ich frage mich: Was?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What do you think you&#8217;ll answer?&#8221;<br \/>\n<em>Und was, glaubst du, wirst du dir antworten?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;paw-marks&#8221; = <em>Pfotenabdr\u00fccke<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He gave a little squeak of excitement.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Es quiekte leicht vor Aufregung.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is classic Pooh.  Not quite the same in German:<br \/>\n&#8220;&#8216;It may be,&#8217; said Pooh.  &#8216;Sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn&#8217;t.  You never can tell with paw-marks.'&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>\u00bbK\u00f6nnte sein\u00ab, sagte Pu.  \u00bbManchmal ist es das und manchmal ist es das nicht.  Bei Pfotenabdr\u00fccken kann man nie wissen.\u00ab<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;was bending over the tracks in a puzzled sort of way&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>beugte sich verbl\u00fcfft \u00fcber die Spuren<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;bent himself perplexedly over the tracks&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hostile Animals&#8221; = <em>feindselige Tiere<\/em><br \/>\n(The translator did not retain the Meaningful Use of Capital Letters.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;a small spinney of larch trees&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>ein kleines Dickicht aus L\u00e4rchenb\u00e4umen<\/em><br \/>\n(Ah!  Now I can find out what a &#8220;spinney&#8221; is!  <em>Dickicht<\/em> = &#8220;thicket.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;what his grandfather Trespassers W had done to Remove Stiffness after Tracking&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>was sein Gro\u00dfvater Betreten V gegen Steifheit in den Gliedern nach der Spurensuche unternommen hatte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Shortness of Breath&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Kurzatmigkeit<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Again, classic Pooh:<br \/>\n&#8220;It is either Two Woozles and one, as it might be, Wizzle, or Two, as it might be, Wizzles and one, if so it is, Woozle.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Es sind entweder zwei Wuschel und ein, falls es das ist, Wischel oder zwei, falls sie das sind, Wischel und ein, falls es das ist, Wuschel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hostile Intent&#8221; = <em>feindselig Absichten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;muddled&#8221; = <em>vermengten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The tracks of four sets of paws&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>die Spuren von vier Pfotenpaaren<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;it brought very little comfort&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>dies wenig Trost brachte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Just in case you need to say this:<br \/>\n&#8220;I have just remembered something that I forgot to do yesterday and shan&#8217;t be able to do tomorrow.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Mir ist etwas eingefallen, was ich gestern zu tun vergessen habe und was ich morgen nicht tun kann.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;dear old Pooh&#8221; = <em>liebster, bester Pu<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Silly old Bear&#8221; = <em>Dummer alter B\u00e4r<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I see now.&#8221; = <em>Jetzt verstehe ich.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have been Foolish and Deluded.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Ich war ein verblendeter Narr.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;I was a deluded fool.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t have the same ring to it:<br \/>\n&#8220;I am a Bear of No Brain at All.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Ich bin ein B\u00e4r ohne jeden Verstand.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;I am a bear without any understanding.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re the Best Bear in All the World.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Du bist der beste B\u00e4r der ganzen Welt.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And then he brightened up suddenly.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Und dann erhellte sich pl\u00f6tzlich seine Miene.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most useful phrase of all:<br \/>\n&#8220;Anyhow, it is nearly Luncheon Time.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Auf jeden Fall, ist es schon fast Zeit zum Mittagessen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Auf jeden Fall, ist es schon fast Mitternacht.
