That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children&#8217;s books, sort of a Very Silly Phrasebook for Travelers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Buch_Tausend_Tage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Buch_Tausend_Tage.jpg\" alt=\"Buch_Tausend_Tage\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Buch_Tausend_Tage.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Buch_Tausend_Tage-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week I&#8217;m back to one of my favorite books in English, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/book_of_a_thousand_days.html\">Book of a Thousand Days<\/a><\/em>, by <a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=16948\">Shannon Hale<\/a> &#8212; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?s=Tausend+Tage\">Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=27142\">Last time<\/a>, I left off ready to start Day 35.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll start with a nice pleasant sentence from <em>Tag 35<\/em>:<br \/>\n&#8220;I hope he has a safe journey.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Hoffentlich kommt er sicher voran.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;Hopefully comes he safely ahead.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>And this is good to know, from Day 39:<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;m in love!&#8221; = <em>Ich bin verliebt!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Oooh, I like these sentences too much not to include them, even though the translation isn&#8217;t complicated:<br \/>\n&#8220;My heart&#8217;s so light it floats and carries me so my feet don&#8217;t walk.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Mein Herz ist so leicht, dass es in der Luft schwebt und mich tr\u00e4gt, sodass meine F\u00fc\u00dfe nicht laufen m\u00fcssen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I sing all day and I don&#8217;t mind the washing, and that&#8217;s how I know I&#8217;m in love.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Ich singe den ganzen Tag und die W\u00e4sche macht mir nichts aus.  Daran erkenne ich, dass ich verliebt bin.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now I have to finish the paragraph!<br \/>\n&#8220;Completely smitten with My Lord the cat.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Hin und weg von Mylord, dem Kater.<\/em><br \/>\n(Bwahaha!  Google Translate gives a very funny translation for this:<br \/>\n&#8220;Toward and away from my Lord, the hangover.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;sleek and gray&#8221; = <em>schlank und grau<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;prettier than a morning sky&#8221; = <em>h\u00fcbscher als der Morgenhimmel<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;mangy&#8221; = <em>r\u00e4udig<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I love Shannon Hale&#8217;s use of language, and it translates well here:<br \/>\n&#8220;they wheezed like startled snakes&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>sie schnauften wie afgeschreckte Schlangen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;petted&#8221; = <em>gestreichelt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;never occurred to me before&#8221; = <em>ist mir zuvor nie in den Kopf gekommen<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;has to me before never in my head come.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;rim of ice&#8221; = <em>Eisschicht<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;bucket&#8221; = <em>Eimer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;funeral&#8221; = <em>Begr\u00e4bnis<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;a lower tone&#8221; = <em>eine tiefere Tonlage<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;high harmony&#8221; = <em>hohen Akkorden<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;rolled up&#8221; = <em>h\u00fcllte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;smothered&#8221; = <em>erstickte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;my jaw was hammering&#8221; = <em>pochte es in meinem Kiefer<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;throbbed it in my jaw&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;reindeer&#8221; = <em>Elchfell<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;what I gave him in return&#8221; = <em>was ich ihm im Gegenzug gab<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;crumble into a heap of ash&#8221; = <em>zu einem H\u00e4ufchen Asche verbrenne<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to stop there &#8212; just before a much longer section, Day 158.  (I&#8217;m going to read it in English to myself, though, before I shut the book.
