It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books.<\/p>\n

\"Sonderlinge<\/a><\/p>\n

This week, we’re back to our stand-by, the most Sonderbook of them all, Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a>, originally titled The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Last time<\/a>, we left off on page 251 in the English version, Seite 318 auf Deutsch.<\/em><\/p>\n

We’ll start with some basic, handy phrases:<\/p>\n

“sudden exit” = \u00fcberst\u00fcrzte Abgang<\/em><\/p>\n

“the talk of the lodge”
\n= das Tagesgespr\u00e4ch im Logenhaus<\/em><\/p>\n

“as the other knights and squires bustled around”
\n= w\u00e4hrend die anderen Ritter und Knappen um sie herumwuselten<\/em><\/p>\n

“dully” = gleichg\u00fcltig<\/em><\/p>\n

Of course we know this one:
\n“cockroaches” = Kakerlaken<\/em><\/p>\n

This one Google translate doesn’t recognize:
\n“bender” = Sauftour<\/em> (but it seems to be “booze-tour”)<\/p>\n

“wrinkled and sweaty” = zerknittert und verschwitzt<\/em><\/p>\n

“their ties stained or missing” = ihre Fliegen waren schmutzig oder fehlten ganz<\/em><\/p>\n

“snoring, drooling” = schnarchenden, sabbernden<\/em><\/p>\n

“society column” = Gesellschaftsspalte<\/em><\/p>\n

This is a little more vehement in translation:
\n“Not a word!<\/em>”
\n= Nicht ein Sterbensw\u00f6rtchen!<\/em>
\n(“Not a dying-little-word!”)<\/p>\n

“fiercely” = hitzig<\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s a sentence worth translating (spoken by a cockroach):
\n“Last night I broke three<\/em> windows, fell down the stairs<\/em>, got in a fight with a beetle<\/em>, danced on eight<\/em> separate tables, and drank things most people don’t even know exist!<\/em>”
\n= Ich habe gestern Nacht drei Fenster eingeschlagen, bin eine Treppe hinuntergefallen, habe mich mit einem K\u00e4fer gepr\u00fcgelt, habe auf insgesamt acht Tischen getanzt und Dinge getrunken, von deren Existenz die meisten Leute nicht einmal etwas ahnen!<\/em>
\n(“I have yesterday night three windows hit in, one staircase fell down, have myself with a beetle beaten, have on a total of eight tables danced and things drunk, of which existence most people don’t have any idea!”)<\/p>\n

“threw out the window” = auf dem Fenster geworfen<\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s a phrase you’ll want to know:
\n“ate enough caviar to kill a man”
\n= so viel Kaviar gefressen, dass es einen normalen Menschen t\u00f6ten w\u00fcrde<\/em><\/p>\n

“What are we going to be outraged about now?”
\n= Wor\u00fcber sollen wir uns jetzt echauffieren?<\/em><\/p>\n

“notoriety” = ber\u00fcchtigen Ruf<\/em> (“notorious reputation”)<\/p>\n

“If I pick my nose” = Wenn ich in der Nase bohre<\/em> (“If I in the nose drill”)<\/p>\n

“vomiting” = kotzen<\/em><\/p>\n

Don’t use this one:
\n“I’ll open a vein and let it run”
\n= Ich schneide mir eine Ader auf und lasse das Blut flie\u00dfen<\/em>
\n(“I will cut me a vein open and let the blood flow”)<\/p>\n

I like this word:
\n“shuffle past” = davonzuschleichen<\/em><\/p>\n

“Insolence! Insolence and impropriety!”
\n= Frechheit! Anma\u00dfung und Unversch\u00e4mheit!<\/em><\/p>\n

Drooling came up again:
\n“drooling grin” = sabbernden Grinsen<\/em><\/p>\n

This is a bit clunkier in German:
\n“Dugan looked like someone had hit him with a brick.”
\n= Dugan schaute aus, als h\u00e4tte ihm jemand mit einem Ziegelstein auf den Kopf geschlagen.<\/em><\/p>\n

“strangled cough” = erstickten Husten<\/em><\/p>\n

That’s it for tonight! This week, if anyone gives you trouble, be ready to call out, “Frechheit! Anma\u00dfung und Unversch\u00e4mheit!<\/em><\/p>\n
