That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children&#8217;s books.  Today is also Valentine&#8217;s Day, so I&#8217;m going to look at Gilderoy Lockhart&#8217;s celebration of Valentine&#8217;s Day in <em>Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,<\/em> otherwise known as <em>Harry Potter und die Kammer des Schreckens<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Chamber_of_Secrets.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Chamber_of_Secrets.jpg\" alt=\"Chamber_of_Secrets\" width=\"417\" height=\"290\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Chamber_of_Secrets.jpg 417w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Chamber_of_Secrets-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Valentine&#8217;s Day section is in Chapter 13, &#8220;The Very Secret Diary,&#8221; (<em>Der sehr geheime Taschenkalender<\/em>) and begins on page 235 in the English edition, <em>Seite 245<\/em> in the German edition.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s Gilderoy Lockhart getting his idea&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You know, what the school needs now is a morale-booster.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Wissen Sie, was die Schule jetzt braucht, ist einen Stimmungsheber.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;humor-lifter&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know just the thing&#8221; = <em>ich wei\u00df genau das Richtige<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;large, lurid pink flowers&#8221; = <em>gro\u00dfen, blassrosa Blumen<\/em><br \/>\n(Hmmm.
