It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books.<\/p>\n

Today I’m back to Pu der B\u00e4r<\/em>, by A. A. Milne, better known to English speakers as Winnie-the-Pooh.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Pu_der_Bar\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Last time we looked at Pu<\/em><\/a>, we finished Kapitel Drei<\/em>, so today we’ll look at Chapter Four — “In Which<\/em> Eeyore Loses a Tail and Pooh Finds One,” which is to say, In welchem I-Ah einen Schwanz verliert und Pu einen findet.<\/em><\/p>\n

I like lots of parts of the first sentence:<\/p>\n

“The Old Grey Donkey, Eeyore” = Der alte graue Esel, I-Ah<\/em><\/p>\n

“a thistly corner of the forest” = einem distelbewachsenen Winkel des Waldes<\/em>
\n(“a thistle-overgrown angle of the forest”)<\/p>\n

“his front feet well apart” = die Vorderbeine gespreizt<\/em><\/p>\n

“his head on one side” = den Kopf auf eine Seite gelegt<\/em><\/p>\n

“and thought about things” = und dachte \u00fcber alles nach<\/em><\/p>\n

“Inasmuch as which?” = Inwiefern?<\/em> (“To what extent?”)<\/p>\n

“came stumping along” = herangestapft kam<\/em><\/p>\n

“gloomy manner” = d\u00fcsterer Weise<\/em><\/p>\n

I’m having fun imagining a reason to say this in Germany:
\n“Why, what’s happened to your tail?”
\n= Was <\/em>ist den mit deinem Schwanz passiert?<\/em><\/p>\n

“with a long, sad sigh” = mit einem langen, traurigen Seufzer<\/em><\/p>\n

“solemnly” = feierlich<\/em><\/p>\n

“So Winnie-the-Pooh went off to find Eeyore’s tail.”
\n= Also machte Winnie-der-Pu auf den Weg um I-Ahs Schwanz zu finden.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Little soft clouds played happily in a blue sky”
\n= Kleine, weiche Wolkenspielten froh an einem blauen Himmel<\/em><\/p>\n

“skipping from time to time in front of the sun”
\n= h\u00fcpften hin und wieder vor die Sonne<\/em><\/p>\n

“dowdy” = ungepflegt<\/em><\/p>\n

“steep banks of sandstone” = steile B\u00f6schungen aus Sandstein<\/em><\/p>\n

“Chestnuts” = Kastanien<\/em><\/p>\n

“MEASLES” = ZIEGENPETER<\/em><\/p>\n

“BUTTERED TOAST” = TOASTMITBUTTER<\/em><\/p>\n

“He’s Moping about it.” = Jetzt bl\u00e4st er Tr\u00fcbsal.<\/em>
\n(“Now blows he sorrow.”)<\/p>\n

“very kindly” = \u00fcberaus freundlicherweise<\/em><\/p>\n

“Bear of Very Little Brain” = B\u00e4r von sehr wenig Verstand<\/em><\/p>\n

“long words Bother me” = lange W\u00f6rter jagen mir Angst ein<\/em><\/p>\n

“sneezed” = geniest<\/em><\/p>\n

“a small something” = ein kleines Sowieso<\/em><\/p>\n

“a lick of honey” = einer Idee Honig<\/em> (“an idea of honey”)<\/p>\n

“frisked” = tobte<\/em><\/p>\n

“waving his tail so happily” = wedelte so gl\u00fccklich mit dem Schwanz<\/em><\/p>\n

And finishing up with the song at the end:<\/p>\n

“Who found the Tail?<\/em>
\n‘I,’ said Pooh,
\n‘At a quarter to two
\n(Only it was quarter to eleven really),
\nI<\/em> found the Tail!'”<\/p>\n

= Wer fand den Schwanz?
