That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books, sort of a Very Silly Phrasebook for Travelers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Buch_Tausend_Tage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Buch_Tausend_Tage.jpg\" alt=\"Buch_Tausend_Tage\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Buch_Tausend_Tage.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Buch_Tausend_Tage-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today I&#8217;m going back to my beloved <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/book_of_a_thousand_days.html\">Book of a Thousand Days<\/a><\/em>, by <a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=16948\">Shannon Hale<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?s=book+of+a+thousand+days\">Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=29908\">Last time on this book<\/a>, we finished <em>Tag 158<\/em> of Dashti and her lady&#8217;s time in the tower.  Today we begin Day 160.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, I will simply quote interesting words and phrases and show how they were translated.  I hope that this gives you a taste of the wonderful writing in this book without giving away the plot.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Times I&#8217;ve asked them for news of the world&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Hin und wieder habe ich sie gefragt, was es in der Welt Neues gibt<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;Here and again have I them asked, what there in the world new is.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>This is nothing new, but always fun to say in German:<br \/>\n&#8220;fresh meat&#8221; = <em>frisches Fleisch<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;held open&#8221; = <em>hochhielt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;snorted&#8221; = <em>schnaubend<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Interesting.  They don&#8217;t just call the color &#8220;peach.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;peach&#8221; = <em>pfirschfarben<\/em> (&#8220;peach-color&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;shades&#8221; = <em>Schattierungen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;wondrous&#8221; = <em>wundersam<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The guard laughed like a horse snorts.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Der W\u00e4chter lachte wie ein wieherndes Pferd.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;The guard laughed like a neighing horse.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;he was sorry for us, and he was sorry for being sorry.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>wir taten ihm leid, und es tat ihm leid, dass wir ihm leidtaten.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And I have to note any <em>Sonder<\/em>words:<br \/>\n&#8220;They weren&#8217;t nice words he said.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Sonderlich nett waren seine Worte nicht.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;Especially nice were his words not.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Interesting that the translator changes some of the metaphors.<br \/>\n&#8220;having made a person feel rubbed down to bones&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>mir den Boden unter den F\u00fc\u00dfen wegzuziehen<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;the floor under my feet pulled away from me&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;rubbish heap&#8221; = <em>Unrathaufen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;god of tricks&#8221; = <em>Gott der Streiche<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;stone hearts&#8221; = <em>versteinerte Herzen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;chick&#8221; = <em>K\u00fcken<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tag 162<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;first breath&#8221; = <em>erster Hauch<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;friskier&#8221; = <em>munterer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;jump and play&#8221; = <em>h\u00fcpfen und spielen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;bits of salt meat&#8221; = <em>Leckerbissen aus Salzfleisch<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;rounded more than straight&#8221; = <em>krummer<\/em> (&#8220;crooked&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;dim&#8221; = <em>tr\u00fcb<\/em> (&#8220;cloudy&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;buds&#8221; = <em>Knospen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;winter hideaway&#8221; = <em>winterlichen Zufluchtsort<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I will stop there, at the end of Day 180, before Tag 223, when some awful things happen.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, may this week find you <em>munterer<\/em> than before.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s time for Sonderling Sunday!
