It\u2019s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books, sort of a Very Silly Phrasebook for Travelers.<\/p>\n

Today I’m going back to my beloved Book of a Thousand Days<\/a><\/em>, by Shannon Hale<\/a>, Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Last time on this book<\/a>, we finished Tag 158<\/em> of Dashti and her lady’s time in the tower. Today we begin Day 160.<\/p>\n

As usual, I will simply quote interesting words and phrases and show how they were translated. I hope that this gives you a taste of the wonderful writing in this book without giving away the plot.<\/p>\n

“Times I’ve asked them for news of the world”
\n= Hin und wieder habe ich sie gefragt, was es in der Welt Neues gibt<\/em>
\n(“Here and again have I them asked, what there in the world new is.”)<\/p>\n

This is nothing new, but always fun to say in German:
\n“fresh meat” = frisches Fleisch<\/em><\/p>\n

“held open” = hochhielt<\/em><\/p>\n

“snorted” = schnaubend<\/em><\/p>\n

Interesting. They don’t just call the color “peach.”
\n“peach” = pfirschfarben<\/em> (“peach-color”)<\/p>\n

“shades” = Schattierungen<\/em><\/p>\n

“wondrous” = wundersam<\/em><\/p>\n

“The guard laughed like a horse snorts.”
\n= Der W\u00e4chter lachte wie ein wieherndes Pferd.<\/em>
\n(“The guard laughed like a neighing horse.”)<\/p>\n

“he was sorry for us, and he was sorry for being sorry.”
\n= wir taten ihm leid, und es tat ihm leid, dass wir ihm leidtaten.<\/em><\/p>\n

And I have to note any Sonder<\/em>words:
\n“They weren’t nice words he said.”
\n= Sonderlich nett waren seine Worte nicht.<\/em>
\n(“Especially nice were his words not.”)<\/p>\n

Interesting that the translator changes some of the metaphors.
\n“having made a person feel rubbed down to bones”
\n= mir den Boden unter den F\u00fc\u00dfen wegzuziehen<\/em>
\n(“the floor under my feet pulled away from me”)<\/p>\n

“rubbish heap” = Unrathaufen<\/em><\/p>\n

“god of tricks” = Gott der Streiche<\/em><\/p>\n

“stone hearts” = versteinerte Herzen<\/em><\/p>\n

“chick” = K\u00fcken<\/em><\/p>\n

Tag 162<\/strong><\/p>\n

“first breath” = erster Hauch<\/em><\/p>\n

“friskier” = munterer<\/em><\/p>\n

“jump and play” = h\u00fcpfen und spielen<\/em><\/p>\n

“bits of salt meat” = Leckerbissen aus Salzfleisch<\/em><\/p>\n

“rounded more than straight” = krummer<\/em> (“crooked”)<\/p>\n

“dim” = tr\u00fcb<\/em> (“cloudy”)<\/p>\n

“buds” = Knospen<\/em><\/p>\n

“winter hideaway” = winterlichen Zufluchtsort<\/em><\/p>\n

I will stop there, at the end of Day 180, before Tag 223, when some awful things happen.<\/p>\n
