It’s time for Sonderling Sunday!<\/a> – That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books.<\/p>\n

\"Sonderlinge<\/a><\/p>\n

This week I’m back to the book that started it all, Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, otherwise known as The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last time, we finished up Chapter 20<\/a>. We are really making progress in this book! Tonight I’m not planning to spend a lot of time — but we will tackle the beginning of Kapitel 21<\/em><\/p>\n

The first sentence is a good one to know:
\n“Rainy season struck hard.”
\n= Die Regenzeit schlug diesmal hart zu.<\/em><\/p>\n

“flying ocean” = fliegender Ozean<\/em><\/p>\n

Ha! This one’s shorter in German:
\n“Thunder banged and growled at all hours”
\n= Es donnerte unaufh\u00f6rlich<\/em>
\n(“It thundered incessantly.” Hmmm. Seems like the translator got a little lazy there.)<\/p>\n

But this one’s not shorter:
\n“fog wrapped the mountain in an unbreakable cloud”
\n= Nebel h\u00fcllte den Berg in eine undurchdringliche Wolke<\/em>
\n(“Fog shrouded the mountain in an impenetrable cloud”)<\/p>\n

We’ve seen this before, but it’s still fun to say:
\n“muddy rivers” = schleimige Fl\u00fcsse<\/em><\/p>\n

“droned” = prasselte<\/em> (“pattered”)<\/p>\n

“leaky ceilings” = l\u00f6chrigen Decken<\/em><\/p>\n

“don’t worry about that” = machen Sie sich deshalb keine Sorgen<\/em><\/p>\n

“enough fight” = genug Mumm<\/em><\/p>\n

“pulled her jacket closer” = schmiegte sich in ihre Jacke<\/em>
\n(“snuggled herself in her jacket”)<\/p>\n

That’s the first section of Chapter 21. It’s short, but I’m going to call it a night and do some schmiegen.<\/p>\n
