It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books.<\/p>\n

Today, we’re continuing in the most Sonder Book of them all, Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, otherwise known as The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy.<\/a><\/p>\n

Last time, we left off on page 284, Seite 360<\/em>, in the middle of Chapter Twenty-One. Jo had been exploring in the library and found an interesting manuscript.<\/p>\n

“Her heart bolted.” = Ihr Herz h\u00e4mmerte.<\/em><\/p>\n

Who knows when you might need to know how to say this sentence?
\n“It was crazy, impossible.”
\n= Das war verr\u00fcckt, schier unm\u00f6glich.<\/em><\/p>\n

“quickly scrawled” = hastig hingeworfen<\/em><\/p>\n

“burning and blooming like a fiery garden”
\n= gl\u00fchten und bl\u00fchten wie ein wilder Garten.<\/em>
\n(“glowed and bloomed like a wild garden”)<\/p>\n

“Jo got down to it.”
\n= Jo st\u00fcrzte sich in die Arbeit.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Hours passed.”
\n= Stunden vergingen<\/em><\/p>\n

“percolating coffeepot” = brodelnde Kaffeemaschine<\/em><\/p>\n

“dense” = begriffsstutzig<\/em><\/p>\n

I like this word:
\n“jewelry box” = Schmuckkassette<\/em><\/p>\n

“translation”
\n= entschl\u00fcsselten Text<\/em>
\n(“decrypted text”)<\/p>\n

“translating rapidly and wildly”
\n= dekodierte den Text schnell und wie im Fieber<\/em>
\n(“decoded the text quickly and like in a fever”)<\/p>\n

“dishonor” = Schande<\/em><\/p>\n

“invincible” = unbesiegbar<\/em><\/p>\n

“positively angry” = eindeutig w\u00fctend<\/em><\/p>\n

“doorstep” = T\u00fcrschwelle<\/em><\/p>\n

“traditional insults” = traditionelle Beleidigungen<\/em><\/p>\n

I dare you to think of a use for this sentence:
\n“When I leave, may a thousand wild pigs overrun it and defile it with enthusiastic snorts.”
\n= Wenn ich es verlasse, warden tausend Wildschweine es \u00fcberrennen und mit ihrem lauten Schnauben sch\u00e4nden<\/em><\/p>\n

“defilement” = Sch\u00e4ndung<\/em><\/p>\n

“trampled into gruel” = zu Brei zertrampelt warden<\/em><\/p>\n

A good phrase to know:
\n“hearty slurps” = lautem Schmatzen<\/em><\/p>\n

And the translator missed a line here! In English, Fiona says “So be it,” and Jo answers “So be it.” In German, only Fiona says So sei es<\/em> and the line with Jo’s response is left out completely.<\/p>\n

And here’s a sentence with a Sonderword:
\n“It was clear she wasn’t impressed.”
\n= Sie war ganz offensichtlich nicht sonderlich beeindruckt.<\/em>
\n(“She was completely obviously not especially impressed.”)<\/p>\n
