That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we&#8217;re continuing in the most Sonder Book of them all, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\">Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, otherwise known as <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/order_of_odd_fish.html\">The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\" alt=\"sonderlinge3\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Sonderlinge3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Sonderlinge3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last time, we left off on page 284, <em>Seite 360<\/em>, in the middle of Chapter Twenty-One.  Jo had been exploring in the library and found an interesting manuscript.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Her heart bolted.&#8221; = <em>Ihr Herz h\u00e4mmerte.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Who knows when you might need to know how to say this sentence?<br \/>\n&#8220;It was crazy, impossible.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Das war verr\u00fcckt, schier unm\u00f6glich.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;quickly scrawled&#8221; = <em>hastig hingeworfen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;burning and blooming like a fiery garden&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>gl\u00fchten und bl\u00fchten wie ein wilder Garten.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;glowed and bloomed like a wild garden&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jo got down to it.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Jo st\u00fcrzte sich in die Arbeit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hours passed.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Stunden vergingen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;percolating coffeepot&#8221; = <em>brodelnde Kaffeemaschine<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;dense&#8221; = <em>begriffsstutzig<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I like this word:<br \/>\n&#8220;jewelry box&#8221; = <em>Schmuckkassette<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;translation&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>entschl\u00fcsselten Text<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;decrypted text&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;translating rapidly and wildly&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>dekodierte den Text schnell und wie im Fieber<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;decoded the text quickly and like in a fever&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;dishonor&#8221; = <em>Schande<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;invincible&#8221; = <em>unbesiegbar<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;positively angry&#8221; = <em>eindeutig w\u00fctend<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;doorstep&#8221; = <em>T\u00fcrschwelle<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;traditional insults&#8221; = <em>traditionelle Beleidigungen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I dare you to think of a use for this sentence:<br \/>\n&#8220;When I leave, may a thousand wild pigs overrun it and defile it with enthusiastic snorts.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Wenn ich es verlasse, warden tausend Wildschweine es \u00fcberrennen und mit ihrem lauten Schnauben sch\u00e4nden<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;defilement&#8221; = <em>Sch\u00e4ndung<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;trampled into gruel&#8221; = <em>zu Brei zertrampelt warden<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A good phrase to know:<br \/>\n&#8220;hearty slurps&#8221; = <em>lautem Schmatzen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And the translator missed a line here!  In English, Fiona says &#8220;So be it,&#8221; and Jo answers &#8220;So be it.&#8221;  In German, only Fiona says <em>So sei es<\/em> and the line with Jo&#8217;s response is left out completely.<\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s a sentence with a Sonderword:<br \/>\n&#8220;It was clear she wasn&#8217;t impressed.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Sie war ganz offensichtlich nicht sonderlich beeindruckt.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;She was completely obviously not especially impressed.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>So, I fondly hope I leave your thoughts <em>gl\u00fchten und bl\u00fchten wie ein wilder Garten.<\/em>  Please, enjoy some <em>lautem Schmatzen<\/em> tonight in honor of Sonderling Sunday!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-count=\"none\" data-via=\"Sonderbooks\">Tweet<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s time for Sonderling Sunday!
