{"id":315,"date":"2009-01-09T18:36:46","date_gmt":"2009-01-09T22:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/2009\/01\/09\/review-of-rapunzels-revenge-by-shannon-and-dean-hale\/"},"modified":"2009-01-20T17:23:00","modified_gmt":"2009-01-20T21:23:00","slug":"review-of-rapunzels-revenge-by-shannon-and-dean-hale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=315","title":{"rendered":"Review of Rapunzel&#8217;s Revenge, by Shannon and Dean Hale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image365\" height=\"239\" alt=\"rapunzels_revenge.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/rapunzels_revenge.jpg\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rapunzel&#8217;s Revenge<\/em><\/p>\n<p>by Shannon and Dean Hale<\/p>\n<p>Illustrated by Nathan Hale<\/p>\n<p>Bloomsbury, 2008.\u00a0 144 pages.<\/p>\n<p>Starred Review.<\/p>\n<p>Sonderbooks Stand-out 2009: #2, Teen Graphic Novels<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shannonhale.com\/\">http:\/\/www.shannonhale.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacestationnathan.com\/\">http:\/\/www.spacestationnathan.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomsburyusa.com\/\">http:\/\/www.bloomsburyusa.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am a huge Shannon Hale fan.\u00a0 So though I normally would not have rushed to buy a graphic novel, when I heard that she had written one with her husband (The artist, though having the same last name, is not related.), I simply had to buy it.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn&#8217;t up there in the best-thing-I&#8217;ve-ever-read territory like her novels, but all the same, this book is completely delightful.\u00a0 Though, come to think of it, it&#8217;s the best graphic novel I&#8217;ve ever read.\u00a0 (Don&#8217;t tell my son!)<\/p>\n<p><em>Rapunzel&#8217;s Revenge <\/em>tells the tale of Rapunzel, set in the old West.\u00a0 Rapunzel is no wimpy princess, waiting for a prince to set her free.\u00a0 When she learns at twelve years old what &#8220;Mother Gothel&#8221; has done to her real mother, and how she terrorizes the countryside, Rapunzel confronts her.\u00a0 She&#8217;s promptly placed in a\u00a0tower\u00a0made from a giant tree that Mother Gothel made with her growth magic.\u00a0 The same magic\u00a0begins to\u00a0affect Rapunzel&#8217;s hair.<\/p>\n<p>There are some fun things in the illustrations.\u00a0 I love the three books Rapunzel has in the tower:\u00a0 <em>Girls Who Get Saved and the Princes Who Save Them, How to Make a Twig Bonnet,<\/em> and <em>There&#8217;s Always Bird Watching.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With nothing to do in the tower, she practices her lasso skills by using her ridiculously long hair, braided into rope.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, after she turns sixteen, her hair is long enough for her to use it to escape her prison.\u00a0 It&#8217;s after her escape that she sees a traveling adventurer who heard about the beautiful maiden in a tower.\u00a0 She points him to the tower and tells him the maiden is slightly deaf, so he should be sure to yell as loud as he can.<\/p>\n<p>On the way back to Gothel&#8217;s villa to rescue her mother, Rapunzel becomes\u00a0a vigilante, helping people with her amazing lasso of hair.\u00a0 She falls in with a rogue named Jack who&#8217;s been having some trouble with giants.\u00a0\u00a0Rapunzel convinces Jack to help her\u00a0rescue\u00a0her mother and bring justice to the countryside, which has been sucked dry by Gothel&#8217;s magic.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a girl who doesn&#8217;t need saving!\u00a0 This imaginative adventure has a heroine you can cheer for.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1599902885\/sonderbooksco-20\" target=\"outside\">Buy from Amazon.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Find this review on the main site at:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/rapunzels_revenge.html\">www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/rapunzels_revenge.html<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rapunzel&#8217;s Revenge by Shannon and Dean Hale Illustrated by Nathan Hale Bloomsbury, 2008.\u00a0 144 pages.
