It\u2019s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books. Tonight I\u2019m continuing a look at Winnie-the-Pooh<\/em>, otherwise known as Pu der B\u00e4r<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"pu_der_bar\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Last week<\/a>, I began Chapter 5, “In Which Piglet Meets a Heffalump,” In welchem Ferkel ein Heffalump trifft<\/em>. We left off on page 63, Seite 69<\/em>. Piglet has dug the Very Deep Pit, and Pooh has placed the bait of honey in the Cunning Trap.<\/p>\n

We’ll start with the first sentence of the section:<\/p>\n

“And off Piglet trotted to his house TRESPASSERS W, while Pooh made his preparations for bed.”
\n= Und Ferkel trabte zu seiner Wohnung BETRETEN V, w\u00e4hrend Pu seine Vorbereitungen f\u00fcr das Ins-Bett-Gehen traf.<\/em><\/p>\n

“the night was beginning to steal away”
\n= die Nacht gerade anfing sich davonzustehlen<\/em><\/p>\n

“sinking feeling” = Gef\u00fchl des Sinkens<\/em><\/p>\n

“murmuring a murmur” = murmelte ein Gemurmel<\/em><\/p>\n

Okay, I have to reproduce the “murmur”:<\/p>\n

“It’s very, very funny,
\n‘Cos I know<\/em> I had some honey;
\n‘Cos it had a label on,
\n Saying HUNNY.<\/p>\n

A goloptious full-up pot too,
\nAnd I don’t know where it’s got to,
\nNo, I don’t know where it’s gone —
\n Well, it’s funny.”<\/p>\n

= Dies ist ein echtes R\u00e4tsel mir;

Try to use this in your conversation:
\n“It all comes of trying to be kind to Heffalumps.”
\n= Das kommt alles daher, dass man versucht Heffalumps gut zu behandeln.<\/em><\/p>\n

And here’s a Useful Sentence:
\n“The more he tried to sleep, the more he couldn’t.”
\n= Je mehr er zu schlafen versuchte, desto mehr konnte er nicht schlafen.<\/em><\/p>\n

“making straight for a pot of Pooh’s honey”
\n= begab sich schnurstracks auf den Weg zu einem Topf mit Honig von Pu<\/em><\/p>\n

(I love that word schnurstracks<\/em>! Google says it means “footprints” or “directly.”)<\/p>\n

“eating it all” = fra\u00df ihn v\u00f6llig leer<\/em> (“devoured it completely empty”)<\/p>\n

“licking its jaws” = die Lefzen leckte<\/em><\/p>\n

“half-light” = D\u00e4mmerlicht<\/em><\/p>\n

“jiggering about” = herumh\u00fcpfte<\/em><\/p>\n

“Was it Fond of Pigs at all?”
\n= Konnte es Schweine \u00fcberhaupt ausstehen?<\/em><\/p>\n

“a Clever Idea” = eine schlaue Idee<\/em><\/p>\n

“heffalumping” = geheffalumpt wurde<\/em><\/p>\n

“Oh, dear, oh, dear, oh, dear!” = Owei, owei, owei!<\/em><\/p>\n

“bumping” = schmettern<\/em><\/p>\n

“made a loud, roaring noise of Sadness and Despair”

And we’ll finish with Christopher Robin’s words at the end of the chapter:

\n= Ach B\u00e4r! Wie sehr ich dich liebe!<\/em><\/p>\n

Now you know how it sounds when you meet a Heffalump and you try to report it in German.<\/p>\n
