That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Sonderlinge-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Sonderlinge-2.jpg\" alt=\"sonderlinge-2\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31839\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Sonderlinge-2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Sonderlinge-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tonight I&#8217;m back to my stand-by, with the wonderfully odd things to translate, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/order_of_odd_fish.html\">The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a>, otherwise known as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\">Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>.  (The existence of this book is what gave me the idea for Sonderling Sunday.)<\/p>\n<p>We left off on page 288 in the original English version, <em>Seite 366 auf Deutsch.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first sentence of the new section would be a practical thing to be able to say in German.<br \/>\n&#8220;Dinner at the lodge was loud and rowdy, as usual.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Das Dinner im Logenhaus fiel wie \u00fcblich laut und ungeb\u00e4rdig aus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jo stewed impatiently.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Jo sa\u00df wie auf hei\u00dfen Kohlen.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;Jo sat like on hot coals.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;cut off the stinger&#8221; = <em>Stachel abtrennen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;follow the gold thread&#8221; = <em>dem goldenen Faden folgen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This seems like a good way to describe someone who&#8217;s wide awake when you wish they weren&#8217;t:<br \/>\n&#8220;wide awake&#8221; = <em>hellwach<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;surprisingly polite and sociable&#8221; = <em>\u00fcberraschend h\u00f6flich und umg\u00e4nglich<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This one&#8217;s a tongue twister:<br \/>\n&#8220;woven&#8221; = <em>gekn\u00fcpft<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;roll by&#8221; = <em>vorbeiglitt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;tapestry&#8221; = <em>Gobelin<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;tapestry&#8221; = <em>Wandteppich<\/em> (&#8220;wall-carpet&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>And lest we forget:<br \/>\n&#8220;special&#8221; = <em>besonders<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a nice long word:<br \/>\n&#8220;responsible stewardship&#8221; = <em>verantwortungsbewusste H\u00e4nde<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All-Devouring Mother&#8221; = <em>All-Verschlingenden Mutter<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;nobody knows which is true&#8221; = <em>niemand wei\u00df, welche zutrifft<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;cramped and packed&#8221; = <em>eng zusammengepfercht<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;the Silver Kitten of Deceit&#8221; = <em>das Silberne K\u00e4tzchen der Arglist<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;vomit out&#8221; = <em>ausw\u00fcrgt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;vengeful&#8221; = <em>rachedurstiges<\/em> (&#8220;revenge-thirsty&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;terrifying&#8221; = <em>einfl\u00f6\u00dfender<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;crashing into each other&#8221; = <em>ineinanderkrachten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;melting into&#8221; = <em>zusammenschmolzen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;lest she miss a single word&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>damit sie auch nicht ein Sterbensw\u00f6rtchen verpasste<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jo cringed.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Jo zuckte zusammen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All these secrets and plots and skullduggery!&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>All diese Geheimnisse, R\u00e4nke und Gemeinheiten!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;glory of battle&#8221; = <em>ruhmreichen Schlacht<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;with her arms crossed&#8221; = <em>mit verschr\u00e4nkten Armen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;stalked&#8221; = <em>schlich sich<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;slammed the door&#8221; = <em>schlug die T\u00fcr hinter sich zu<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;ran downstairs in a panic&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>rannte in panischem Schrecken die Treppe hinab<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;trapdoor&#8221; = <em>Fallt\u00fcr<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And that brings me to the end of Chapter 21.
