It\u2019s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books.<\/p>\n

Tonight I’m back to my stand-by, with the wonderfully odd things to translate, The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a>, otherwise known as Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>. (The existence of this book is what gave me the idea for Sonderling Sunday.)<\/p>\n

We left off on page 288 in the original English version, Seite 366 auf Deutsch.<\/em><\/p>\n

The first sentence of the new section would be a practical thing to be able to say in German.
\n“Dinner at the lodge was loud and rowdy, as usual.”
\n= Das Dinner im Logenhaus fiel wie \u00fcblich laut und ungeb\u00e4rdig aus.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Jo stewed impatiently.”
\n= Jo sa\u00df wie auf hei\u00dfen Kohlen.<\/em>
\n(“Jo sat like on hot coals.”)<\/p>\n

“cut off the stinger” = Stachel abtrennen<\/em><\/p>\n

“follow the gold thread” = dem goldenen Faden folgen<\/em><\/p>\n

This seems like a good way to describe someone who’s wide awake when you wish they weren’t:
\n“wide awake” = hellwach<\/em><\/p>\n

“surprisingly polite and sociable” = \u00fcberraschend h\u00f6flich und umg\u00e4nglich<\/em><\/p>\n

This one’s a tongue twister:
\n“woven” = gekn\u00fcpft<\/em><\/p>\n

“roll by” = vorbeiglitt<\/em><\/p>\n

“tapestry” = Gobelin<\/em><\/p>\n

“tapestry” = Wandteppich<\/em> (“wall-carpet”)<\/p>\n

And lest we forget:
\n“special” = besonders<\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s a nice long word:
\n“responsible stewardship” = verantwortungsbewusste H\u00e4nde<\/em><\/p>\n

“All-Devouring Mother” = All-Verschlingenden Mutter<\/em><\/p>\n

“nobody knows which is true” = niemand wei\u00df, welche zutrifft<\/em><\/p>\n

“cramped and packed” = eng zusammengepfercht<\/em><\/p>\n

“the Silver Kitten of Deceit” = das Silberne K\u00e4tzchen der Arglist<\/em><\/p>\n

“vomit out” = ausw\u00fcrgt<\/em><\/p>\n

“vengeful” = rachedurstiges<\/em> (“revenge-thirsty”)<\/p>\n

“terrifying” = einfl\u00f6\u00dfender<\/em><\/p>\n

“crashing into each other” = ineinanderkrachten<\/em><\/p>\n

“melting into” = zusammenschmolzen<\/em><\/p>\n

“lest she miss a single word”
\n= damit sie auch nicht ein Sterbensw\u00f6rtchen verpasste<\/em><\/p>\n

“Jo cringed.”
\n= Jo zuckte zusammen.<\/em><\/p>\n

“All these secrets and plots and skullduggery!”

And that brings me to the end of Chapter 21. It was \u00fcberraschend h\u00f6flich und umg\u00e4nglich<\/em>.<\/p>\n
