{"id":32386,"date":"2017-01-20T23:38:43","date_gmt":"2017-01-21T03:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=32386"},"modified":"2017-01-20T23:39:44","modified_gmt":"2017-01-21T03:39:44","slug":"jacqueline-woodson-at-alsc-mini-institute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=32386","title":{"rendered":"Jacqueline Woodson at ALSC Mini-Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our Closing Session speaker at today\u2019s ALSC Mini-Institute was Jacqueline Woodson.<\/p>\n<p>She talked about how in view of what today is, that it\u2019s good to be with librarians.\u00a0 We have to transform silence into action, and Libraries do Transform.<\/p>\n<p>We can have empathy for those we disagree with because we all know what it is to have fear.<\/p>\n<p>Begin a conversation across misunderstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Memory keeps her moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>Keep hope in the room and in your lives.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget to vote at the local level, too.\u00a0 We do have the power to create change.\u00a0 It\u2019s important to hold onto history.<\/p>\n<p>We had a mini-Institute because we decided not to meet in North Carolina.\u00a0 She said, \u201cThis country has always messed with bathrooms.\u201d\u00a0 She\u2019s deeply proud of the Institute organizers for taking a stand, as a person deeply committed to making this place safe across lines.<\/p>\n<p>These conversations are disruptive, but healing.\u00a0 Healing begins by being willing to talk with people.<\/p>\n<p>Conversations can begin in the library.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re so much stronger than you think you are \u2014 because look at the history that got you here.<\/p>\n<p>Writing is a way of healing, a way to make sense out of this journey.<\/p>\n<p>When you tell your story, some will be eager to hear who you are.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Closing Session speaker at today\u2019s ALSC Mini-Institute was Jacqueline Woodson.
