Here are librarians milling around, waiting for the Exhibits to open at 5:30 pm.\u00a0 When they do open, the crush is not insignificant.<\/p>\n

This year, I had a mission:\u00a0 I wanted an Advance Reader Copy of Megan Whalen Turner\u2019s fifth book in the Queen\u2019s Thief<\/em> series, Thick as Thieves<\/em>.\u00a0 I even reread the rest of the series this week.<\/p>\n

I checked the publisher (HarperCollins), learned the booth number (2016), and headed straight for it.<\/p>\n

I got a copy!<\/p>\n

Mind you, they were in the back \u2014 you had to ask.\u00a0 I got a tip from a friend years ago that if there are books you know you want, to be ready to ask for them.<\/p>\n

But then \u2014 Book Frenzy began.\u00a0 Publishers placed out Advance Reader Copies (and even some finished books) free for the taking.<\/p>\n

You roam the crowded aisles walking past them.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t have it in me to resist.\u00a0 I\u2019m afraid that I\u2019m in good company.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s more, I have a medical reason why I should not carry bags of heavy books on my right shoulder, so I get to bring a wheeled bag onto the floor (with a doctor\u2019s note).<\/p>\n

Alas!\u00a0 That tends to make me show even less restraint.<\/p>\n

I came away with 35 books tonight. \u00a0(Well,\u00a05 of those were from the Mini-Institute.)\u00a0 I will use the ones for middle grade readers as prizes for a games program I do at the library.\u00a0 Some, like Thick as Thieves and Frog Kisser!, a new Garth Nix book, I will probably read before I get home.<\/p>\n

The only solution to Book Frenzy seems to be to stay OUT of the Exhibit Hall.\u00a0 Unfortunately, some programs I want to attend are happening at the Pop Top stage or Book Buzz Theater in the back of the Exhibit Hall.\u00a0 And I got a ticket to the YALSA Morris and Nonfiction Awards event, where they give you books if you attend.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m afraid once I pick up one book, I\u2019ll figure I might as well fill my bag.<\/p>\n

So the question of the conference for me becomes, can I learn restraint?<\/p>\n

And also, where shall I ship today\u2019s load of books?\u00a0 FedEx in the hotel or the Post Office on the Exhibit floor?\u00a0 (But if I go to the Post Office, I\u2019m sure to pick up more books on the way\u2026.)<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not going to cart these books back to the conference, so it will be FedEx, but which morning should I bring them down?\u00a0 If I don\u2019t do it tomorrow, I\u2019ll be tempted to keep adding to the load\u2026.<\/p>\n

The trouble is, these are lovely problems to have.\u00a0 I\u2019m also afraid I\u2019m quite unrepentant.\u00a0 Which doesn\u2019t bode well for my future self-restraint.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
