{"id":32425,"date":"2017-01-22T20:33:50","date_gmt":"2017-01-23T00:33:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=32425"},"modified":"2023-08-14T22:54:52","modified_gmt":"2023-08-15T02:54:52","slug":"publisher-previews-at-alamw17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=32425","title":{"rendered":"Publisher Previews at #alamw17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My main activity at ALA Midwinter Meeting today was two publisher previews \u2013 Scholastic and Boyds Mills Press. \u00a0The second one fed me lunch, which was much nicer than waiting in line for high-priced fast food.<\/p>\n<p>Even more than the books previewed, the sessions were a nice chance to talk with more children\u2019s book people whom I haven\u2019t seen since the last conference or to make new connections.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s gotten where I love the world of ALSC \u2013 These are my people!<\/p>\n<p>A lot of the faces I\u2019ve seen many times before. \u00a0Perhaps after awhile we\u2019ll remember exactly when and where we met \u2014 but I know they\u2019re children\u2019s book folks, and thus my people!<\/p>\n<p>As for books \u2014 It sounds like it\u2019s going to be another good year! \u00a0I liked that Wendy Wan-Long Shang and Madelyn Rosenberg wrote\u00a0a book about a boy who is half Jewish and half Chinese (<em>This Is Not a Test<\/em>). \u00a0I wonder if they know about the book I heard about yesterday by Susan Tan about a girl with the same ethnicity. \u00a0(The books sound completely different, but both very interesting.)<\/p>\n<p>It was fun to hear Gordon Korman talk about his new book. \u00a0I didn\u2019t realize that he got his first book published when he was 12, in 1976. \u00a0That means he\u2019s the same age as me, which doesn\u2019t surprise me, because my 28-year-old heard Gordon Korman speak at her school when she was in middle school.<\/p>\n<p>His new book,\u00a0<em>Restart<\/em>,\u00a0is about a bully who hits his head and gets amnesia. \u00a0It seems like an opportunity to become someone different \u2014 but that turns out to be harder than it might seem.<\/p>\n<p>We also heard from Natasha Tarpley, author of\u00a0<em>The Harlem Charade<\/em>, a story about three 7th graders and some interlocking mysteries. \u00a0It celebrates the history of Harlem. \u00a0She reminded us that you can create change through stories. \u00a0Libraries are important to help kids discover their own stories.<\/p>\n<p>At the Boyds Mills Press lunch, we saw some fantastic picture books. \u00a0I especially liked\u00a0<em>Puppy! Puppy! Puppy!<\/em> \u00a0There was a nonfiction picture book called <em>The Secret Life of a Red Fox<\/em> with simply glorious art.\u00a0And there were books for older readers, including an oh-so-timely biography of Alice Paul.<\/p>\n<p>Also, I was given a bag of 6 more Advance Reader Copies. \u00a0Guess I might as well go into the exhibits and make another shipment\u2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My main activity at ALA Midwinter Meeting today was two publisher previews \u2013 Scholastic and Boyds Mills Press. \u00a0The second one fed me lunch, which was much nicer than waiting in line for high-priced fast food.
