It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books.<\/p>\n

I’m afraid it’s actually been months since the last time I did Sonderling Sunday<\/a>. When I was reading for the Cybils, it was hard to fit in, and then I got out of the habit… and went to ALA Midwinter Meeting….<\/p>\n

So tonight, I’m going to write a short one, even though it’s late — the better to get back in the habit!<\/p>\n

I’m going back to my stand-by, Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a>, known in the original English as The Order of Odd-fish<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Last time, we finished a chapter! So we are now beginning Chapter 22, which is on page 296 in the English edition, and on Seite 376<\/em> in the German edition.<\/p>\n

It’s always nice to start a chapter with the first sentence, and this time I’ll go with the first two:<\/p>\n

“The rain kept coming. Two months into the rainy season, Jo found it hard to remember life without rain.”
\n= Es regnete unaufh\u00f6rlich. Nach zwei Monaten Regenzeit konnte Jo sich kaum noch daran erinnern, wie das Leben ohne Regen gewesen war.<\/em><\/p>\n

“a dull weariness” = eine dumpfe Tr\u00e4gheit<\/em><\/p>\n

“colorless, drenched, and dead” = farblos, nass und tot vor<\/em><\/p>\n

This just doesn’t have the same sound in German:
\n“when the rain pattered gently on her windowpane”
\n= wenn der Regen sanft an ihr Fenster klopfte<\/em><\/p>\n

“bang of thunder” = Donnerschlag<\/em><\/p>\n

“Jo tried to shove it into the back of her mind”
\n= Jo wollte den Gedanken eigentlich beiseiteschieben<\/em>
\n(“Jo wanted the thoughts actually to aside-push”)<\/p>\n

Here’s a nice long word:
\n“background noise” = Hintergrundger\u00e4usch<\/em><\/p>\n

“constant worry” = st\u00e4ndiger Furcht<\/em><\/p>\n

“didn’t dull its edge”
\n= schm\u00e4lerte das die Intensit\u00e4t des Gef\u00fchls nicht<\/em>
\n(“reduced it the intensity of the feeling not”)<\/p>\n

“She needed distractions.”
\n= Sie brauchte dringend eine Ablenkung.<\/em>
\n(“She needed urgently a distraction.”)<\/p>\n

“specialties” = Fachgebiete<\/em><\/p>\n

“slept over” = gen\u00e4chtigt hatte<\/em><\/p>\n

“but no, it was too nerve-wracking to think about”
\n= Doch nein, schon dar\u00fcber nachzudenken, war eine zu gro\u00dfe Belastung f\u00fcr ihre Nerven.<\/em>
\n(“But no, already about that overthinking, was a too big burden for her nerves.”)<\/p>\n

“Desolation Day” = der Tag der Verw\u00fcstung<\/em> (“the day of devastation”)<\/p>\n

“special festival” = besonderes Fest<\/em><\/p>\n

“It was bad luck even to mention Desolation Day.”
\n= Es brachte bereits Ungl\u00fcck, wenn man den Tag der Verw\u00fcstung auch nur erw\u00e4hnte.<\/em><\/p>\n

And I’m going to stop there, with just the first section of Chapter 22 finished. But I’m going to look for reasons to talk about Hintergrundger\u00e4usch<\/em> this week.<\/p>\n
