That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children&#8217;s books.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m afraid it&#8217;s actually been months since <a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=31836\">the last time I did Sonderling Sunday<\/a>.  When I was reading for the Cybils, it was hard to fit in, and then I got out of the habit&#8230; and went to ALA Midwinter Meeting&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>So tonight, I&#8217;m going to write a short one, even though it&#8217;s late &#8212; the better to get back in the habit!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going back to my stand-by, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\">Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a>, known in the original English as <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/order_of_odd_fish.html\">The Order of Odd-fish<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Last time, we finished a chapter!  So we are now beginning Chapter 22, which is on page 296 in the English edition, and on <em>Seite 376<\/em> in the German edition.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s always nice to start a chapter with the first sentence, and this time I&#8217;ll go with the first two:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The rain kept coming.  Two months into the rainy season, Jo found it hard to remember life without rain.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Es regnete unaufh\u00f6rlich.  Nach zwei Monaten Regenzeit konnte Jo sich kaum noch daran erinnern, wie das Leben ohne Regen gewesen war.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;a dull weariness&#8221; = <em>eine dumpfe Tr\u00e4gheit<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;colorless, drenched, and dead&#8221; = <em>farblos, nass und tot vor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This just doesn&#8217;t have the same sound in German:<br \/>\n&#8220;when the rain pattered gently on her windowpane&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>wenn der Regen sanft an ihr Fenster klopfte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;bang of thunder&#8221; = <em>Donnerschlag<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jo tried to shove it into the back of her mind&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Jo wollte den Gedanken eigentlich beiseiteschieben<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;Jo wanted the thoughts actually to aside-push&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a nice long word:<br \/>\n&#8220;background noise&#8221; = <em>Hintergrundger\u00e4usch<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;constant worry&#8221; = <em>st\u00e4ndiger Furcht<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;didn&#8217;t dull its edge&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>schm\u00e4lerte das die Intensit\u00e4t des Gef\u00fchls nicht<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;reduced it the intensity of the feeling not&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She needed distractions.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Sie brauchte dringend eine Ablenkung.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;She needed urgently a distraction.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;specialties&#8221; = <em>Fachgebiete<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;slept over&#8221; = <em>gen\u00e4chtigt hatte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;but no, it was too nerve-wracking to think about&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Doch nein, schon dar\u00fcber nachzudenken, war eine zu gro\u00dfe Belastung f\u00fcr ihre Nerven.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;But no, already about that overthinking, was a too big burden for her nerves.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Desolation Day&#8221; = <em>der Tag der Verw\u00fcstung<\/em> (&#8220;the day of devastation&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;special festival&#8221; = <em>besonderes Fest<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was bad luck even to mention Desolation Day.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Es brachte bereits Ungl\u00fcck, wenn man den Tag der Verw\u00fcstung auch nur erw\u00e4hnte.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;m going to stop there, with just the first section of Chapter 22 finished.
