It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books.<\/p>\n

Tonight I’m going back to the book that started this feature, Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, which is the translation of The Order of Odd-fish<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last time (far too long ago), I covered Jo’s dinner with Fiona<\/a>, and ended on page 304 in the original English edition, Seite 387<\/em> in the German edition.<\/p>\n

The first sentence of the next section is so practical, I’ll start with that:<\/p>\n

“Jo couldn’t sleep.” = Jo konnte nicht einschlafen.<\/em><\/p>\n

“bubbling and boiling” = \u00fcberschlugen<\/em>
\n(Google Translate says “raced.” The context is this is what Fiona’s thoughts are doing. The original English seems a bit more vivid.)<\/p>\n

“dream-wracked” = von Tr\u00e4umen gepeinigt<\/em> (“by dreams tormented”)<\/p>\n

I hope you won’t need to say this!
\n“Everyone up. It’s Desolation Day.”

“underground courtyard” = unterirdischen Hof<\/em><\/p>\n

“exhausted and disoriented” = ersch\u00f6pft und orientierungslos<\/em><\/p>\n

I think this sentence has come up before, but I like it.
