That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children&#8217;s books.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tonight I&#8217;m going back to the book that started this feature, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\">Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, which is the translation of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/order_of_odd_fish.html\">The Order of Odd-fish<\/a><\/em>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last time (far too long ago), <a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=32873\">I covered Jo&#8217;s dinner with Fiona<\/a>, and ended on page 304 in the original English edition, <em>Seite 387<\/em> in the German edition.<\/p>\n<p>The first sentence of the next section is so practical, I&#8217;ll start with that:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jo couldn&#8217;t sleep.&#8221; = <em>Jo konnte nicht einschlafen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;bubbling and boiling&#8221; = <em>\u00fcberschlugen<\/em><br \/>\n(Google Translate says &#8220;raced.&#8221;  The context is this is what Fiona&#8217;s thoughts are doing.  The original English seems a bit more vivid.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;dream-wracked&#8221; = <em>von Tr\u00e4umen gepeinigt<\/em> (&#8220;by dreams tormented&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>I hope you won&#8217;t need to say this!<br \/>\n&#8220;Everyone up.  It&#8217;s Desolation Day.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Aufstehen.
