That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children&#8217;s books.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tonight I&#8217;m going back to the especially <em>Sonder<\/em>-book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\">Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, which is the translation of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/order_of_odd_fish.html\">The Order of Odd-fish<\/a><\/em>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last time, I left off in the middle of Chapter 23, page 314, in English, <em>Seite 399 auf Deutsch.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the sentence that begins the section:<br \/>\n&#8220;The sun sank behind the trees, and the sky darkened, but the festival went on.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Die Sonne versank hinter den B\u00e4umen und es wurde dunkel, aber das Fest ging weiter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A sweaty man by nature&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Der Ritter neigte ohnehin zu Schwei\u00dfausbr\u00fcchen<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;The knight tended anyway to sweat-outbreaks&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;particularly damp&#8221; = <em>besonders verschwitzt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;golden swimsuit&#8221; = <em>goldfarbenen Badeanzug<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Stroke him, reassure him.&#8221; = <em>Streichelt ihn, beruhigt ihn.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;pinching&#8221; = <em>zwackt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A good sentence to know:<br \/>\n&#8220;Now you&#8217;re just being silly.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Jetzt sind Sie aber wirklich albern.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And you thought we&#8217;d never learn how to say this!<br \/>\n&#8220;ridiculous farts and burps&#8221; = <em>alberne F\u00fcrze und R\u00fclpser<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ha!  I caught a mistake in the translation!  The English says:<br \/>\n&#8220;It was difficult to believe the music was grunts and snorts forced out of a giant worm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the translation says:<br \/>\n<em>dass es schwer zu glauben war, diese Musik w\u00fcrde aus Grunzen, Schnauben, F\u00fcrzen und R\u00fclpsern eines gigantischen Wurms bestehen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>See what they&#8217;ve done?  Although when Sir Alasdair began playing the Urk-Ack by climbing inside it and pinching its organs <em>at first<\/em> all that came out was farts and burps.  Now he has progressed and is giving a lovely concert &#8211; but the translator put the farts and burps back in!  Oops!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;like a blob of pink putty&#8221; = <em>wie ein rosafarbener Gummiball<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You should be able to say this:<br \/>\n&#8220;This is my moment of triumph!&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Das ist mein Augenblick des Triumphes!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;explosive&#8221; = <em>Sprengstoff<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;roguishly&#8221; = <em>schelmisch<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;candy wrappers&#8221; = <em>Bonbonpapier<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;reckless zeal&#8221; = <em>r\u00fccksichtslosem Eifer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The audience was booing.&#8221; = <em>Die Zuschauer buhten.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;caterwauling&#8221; = <em>jaulenden<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;adoring fans&#8221; = <em>hingebungsvollen Anh\u00e4nger<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;jeers&#8221; = <em>die h\u00f6hnischen Zwischenrufe<\/em> (&#8220;the sneery calls&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;the stage&#8221; = <em>der B\u00fchne<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;savior&#8221; = <em>Retter<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;pusillanimous&#8221; = <em>kleinkarierten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Consarn it&#8221; = <em>Sapperlot<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;handyman&#8221; = <em>Faktotum<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;tousling&#8221; = <em>verwuselte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;whirlwind&#8221; = <em>Wirbelwind<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;parachutes&#8221; = <em>Fallschirmen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;conductor&#8221; = <em>Dirigenten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;shoved aside&#8221; = <em>beseitegeschoben worden<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a good sentence to know:<br \/>\n&#8220;I expect you to solve all my problems!&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Ich erwarte, dass Sie alle meine Probleme l\u00f6sen!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;waved&#8221; = <em>wedelte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;crumpled papers&#8221; = <em>zerkn\u00fcllter Bl\u00e4tter<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;cameo&#8221; = <em>Nebenrolle<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;unbutton&#8221; = <em>aufzukn\u00fcpfen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;grunting and grinning&#8221; = <em>grunzend und grinsend<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;footlights&#8221; = <em>Rampenlichter<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;waggled his hips&#8221; = <em>wackelte mit seinen H\u00fcften<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;a throbbing, squirming mass of blubber and muscle&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>eine pulsierende, wabernde Masse von Speck und Muskeln<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And that brings us to the end of Chapter 23!<\/p>\n<p>I think it&#8217;s fun how little these phrases give away the plot &#8211; I hope they tantalize the reader to want to know the details!<\/p>\n<p><em>Bis bald!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-count=\"none\" data-via=\"Sonderbooks\">Tweet<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s time for Sonderling Sunday!
