It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books.<\/p>\n

Tonight I’m going back to the especially Sonder<\/em>-book, Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, which is the translation of The Order of Odd-fish<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last time, I left off in the middle of Chapter 23, page 314, in English, Seite 399 auf Deutsch.<\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s the sentence that begins the section:
\n“The sun sank behind the trees, and the sky darkened, but the festival went on.”
\n= Die Sonne versank hinter den B\u00e4umen und es wurde dunkel, aber das Fest ging weiter.<\/em><\/p>\n

“A sweaty man by nature”
\n= Der Ritter neigte ohnehin zu Schwei\u00dfausbr\u00fcchen<\/em>
\n(“The knight tended anyway to sweat-outbreaks”)<\/p>\n

“particularly damp” = besonders verschwitzt<\/em><\/p>\n

“golden swimsuit” = goldfarbenen Badeanzug<\/em><\/p>\n

“Stroke him, reassure him.” = Streichelt ihn, beruhigt ihn.<\/em><\/p>\n

“pinching” = zwackt<\/em><\/p>\n

A good sentence to know:
\n“Now you’re just being silly.”
\n= Jetzt sind Sie aber wirklich albern.<\/em><\/p>\n

And you thought we’d never learn how to say this!
\n“ridiculous farts and burps” = alberne F\u00fcrze und R\u00fclpser<\/em><\/p>\n

Ha! I caught a mistake in the translation! The English says:
\n“It was difficult to believe the music was grunts and snorts forced out of a giant worm.”<\/p>\n

But the translation says:
\ndass es schwer zu glauben war, diese Musik w\u00fcrde aus Grunzen, Schnauben, F\u00fcrzen und R\u00fclpsern eines gigantischen Wurms bestehen.<\/em><\/p>\n

See what they’ve done? Although when Sir Alasdair began playing the Urk-Ack by climbing inside it and pinching its organs at first<\/em> all that came out was farts and burps. Now he has progressed and is giving a lovely concert – but the translator put the farts and burps back in! Oops!<\/p>\n

“like a blob of pink putty” = wie ein rosafarbener Gummiball<\/em><\/p>\n

You should be able to say this:
\n“This is my moment of triumph!”
\n= Das ist mein Augenblick des Triumphes!<\/em><\/p>\n

“explosive” = Sprengstoff<\/em><\/p>\n

“roguishly” = schelmisch<\/em><\/p>\n

“candy wrappers” = Bonbonpapier<\/em><\/p>\n

“reckless zeal” = r\u00fccksichtslosem Eifer<\/em><\/p>\n

“The audience was booing.” = Die Zuschauer buhten.<\/em><\/p>\n

“caterwauling” = jaulenden<\/em><\/p>\n

“adoring fans” = hingebungsvollen Anh\u00e4nger<\/em><\/p>\n

“jeers” = die h\u00f6hnischen Zwischenrufe<\/em> (“the sneery calls”)<\/p>\n

“the stage” = der B\u00fchne<\/em><\/p>\n

“savior” = Retter<\/em><\/p>\n

“pusillanimous” = kleinkarierten<\/em><\/p>\n

“Consarn it” = Sapperlot<\/em><\/p>\n

“handyman” = Faktotum<\/em><\/p>\n

“tousling” = verwuselte<\/em><\/p>\n

“whirlwind” = Wirbelwind<\/em><\/p>\n

“parachutes” = Fallschirmen<\/em><\/p>\n

“conductor” = Dirigenten<\/em><\/p>\n

“shoved aside” = beseitegeschoben worden<\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s a good sentence to know:
\n“I expect you to solve all my problems!”
\n= Ich erwarte, dass Sie alle meine Probleme l\u00f6sen!<\/em><\/p>\n

“waved” = wedelte<\/em><\/p>\n

“crumpled papers” = zerkn\u00fcllter Bl\u00e4tter<\/em><\/p>\n

“cameo” = Nebenrolle<\/em><\/p>\n

“unbutton” = aufzukn\u00fcpfen<\/em><\/p>\n

“grunting and grinning” = grunzend und grinsend<\/em><\/p>\n

“footlights” = Rampenlichter<\/em><\/p>\n

“waggled his hips” = wackelte mit seinen H\u00fcften<\/em><\/p>\n

“a throbbing, squirming mass of blubber and muscle”
\n= eine pulsierende, wabernde Masse von Speck und Muskeln<\/em><\/p>\n

And that brings us to the end of Chapter 23!<\/p>\n

I think it’s fun how little these phrases give away the plot – I hope they tantalize the reader to want to know the details!<\/p>\n
