It\u2019s another beginning chapter book about Charlie and his little brother Mouse. In this book their grandfather, Grumpy, comes to visit.<\/p>\n

This book hits just the right note, telling about interactions of the boys with Grumpy. There are four short stories. The parents don\u2019t come into it at all (except being referred to a bit), but each story is strictly between the boys and Grumpy.<\/p>\n

My favorite story is \u201cPouncing.\u201d Here\u2019s how it begins:<\/p>\n

Charlie woke up.
\nMouse woke up.
\n\u201cGrumpy is here!\u201d said Charlie.
\n\u201cShould we pounce him?\u201d asked Mouse.
\n\u201cOf course!\u201d said Charlie.
\nThey snuck downstairs.<\/p>\n

Grumpy was in the kitchen.
\nGrumpy was drinking coffee.<\/p>\n

Mouse looked sad.
\n\u201cWhy are you sad?\u201d Grumpy asked Mouse.
\n\u201cWe wanted to pounce you,\u201d said Mouse.
\n\u201cSo pounce me!\u201d said Grumpy.
\n\u201cWe can only pounce
\nwhen you are sleeping,\u201d
\nsaid Charlie.
\n\u201cIt is a rule,\u201d said Mouse.
\n\u201cThat makes sense,\u201d said Grumpy. \u201cBut you will have to get up very early to catch me sleeping.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As the story continues, Grumpy \u201crests his eyes\u201d and his nose begins to snore. I like that the author doesn\u2019t tell us what the boys decide to do. We know what will happen!<\/p>\n

There\u2019s all kinds of charm in these stories. They\u2019re suitable for a beginning reader to read themselves or for a young one to listen and enjoy. Grandparents will especially enjoy reading these to their grandchildren.<\/p>\n
