That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children&#8217;s books.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sonderlinge3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tonight it&#8217;s back to the especially <em>Sonder<\/em>-book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\">Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, which is the translation of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/order_of_odd_fish.html\">The Order of Odd-fish<\/a><\/em>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=33453\">Last time<\/a>, we finished Chapter 23!  So now it&#8217;s on to Chapter Twenty-Four!  [This is out of 28 chapters.  My Sonderling Sunday posts are becoming less and less frequent.  This is mostly because I&#8217;ve become part of a group that plays games on Sunday afternoon.  And I just like the sound of &#8220;Sonderling Sunday&#8221; too much to switch to another day.  Theoretically, as the year 2018 progresses, I should spend less time posting and more time reading.  So we shall see what happens.  But anyway, tonight the gaming hosts are getting home from a holiday weekend with family, so here I am ready to translate!]<\/p>\n<p>The first sentence of Chapter 24 is a perfect sentence for translating.  I&#8217;m sure you want to know how to say this, should you ever be in Germany!<br \/>\n&#8220;The return of the Belgian Prankster sparked a citywide panic.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Die R\u00fcckkehr des Belgischen Scherzkekses l\u00f6ste in der ganzen Stadt einen wahren Tumult aus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;breathless and exhausted&#8221; = <em>atemlos und ersch\u00f6pft<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;flurry of chaos&#8221; = <em>Chaos der Verwirrung<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;still others sat numbly on the sidewalk&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>wieder andere sa\u00dfen wie bet\u00e4ubt auf dem B\u00fcrgersteig<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It amuses me how much longer this is in German:<br \/>\n&#8220;Everybody had the same panicked expression.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Die Menschen dort trugen alle denselben panikerf\u00fcllten Gesichtsausdruck zur Schau.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;jittery conversations&#8221; = <em>nerv\u00f6sen Gespr\u00e4chen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;headlines&#8221; = <em>Schlagzeile<\/em> (&#8220;strike-row&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;baffling&#8221; = <em>verbl\u00fcffende<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No one dared venture near.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Niemand wagte es auch nur, in seine N\u00e4he zu kommen.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;No one dared it even, in his neighborhood to come.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;stern chiding&#8221; = <em>scharfe R\u00fcffel<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;public ridicule&#8221; = <em>\u00f6ffentlichen Gesp\u00f6tt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;poked him&#8221; = <em>piksten ihn<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is a great sentence:<br \/>\n&#8220;People will put up with being terrified, but no one will tolerate being bored.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Die Menschen ertragen es, in Angst und Schrecken zu leben, aber keiner nimmt es hin, gelangweilt zu werden.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Asylum for the Feeble of Brain&#8221; = <em>Asyl f\u00fcr die Geistesschwachen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jo drank coffee after coffee&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Jo trank unabl\u00e4ssig Kaffee<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;Jo drank ceaselessly coffee&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;suicide&#8221; = <em>selbstm\u00f6rderisch<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;sticky and sluggish&#8221; = <em>stickig und z\u00e4h<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nothing seemed worth doing.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Nichts schien der Anstrengung wert zu sein.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;eyes ache&#8221; = <em>Augen wehtaten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;writhed&#8221; = <em>w\u00e4lzte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;feeling like she was wrapped in hot wet cotton&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>hatte das Gef\u00fchl, sie w\u00e4re in hei\u00dfe, nasse Baumwolllaken eingewickelt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The last sentence of the section about the Belgian Prankster:<br \/>\n&#8220;Furious but repulsed, fascinated but terrified, she felt herself pulled toward him.&#8221;<br \/>\n<em>Sie war w\u00fctend und angewidert, fasziniert und ver\u00e4ngstigt und f\u00fchlte sich trotz allem zu ihm hingezogen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s hoping you never have occasion to use that sentence!<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all for tonight!
