That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books, sort of a Very Silly Phrasebook for Travelers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Buch_Tausend_Tage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Buch_Tausend_Tage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Buch_Tausend_Tage.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Buch_Tausend_Tage-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week, I&#8217;ll be going back to one of my favorite young adult novels, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/book_of_a_thousand_days.html\">Book of a Thousand Days<\/a><\/em>, by Shannon Hale, known as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?s=book+of+a+thousand+days\">Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/a><\/em> in German.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s actually been three years since we did <a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=29908\">a Sonderling Sunday in this book<\/a>!  (This is far, far, too long &#8212; more than a thousand days!)  We&#8217;re &#8220;Later&#8221; on Day 223, which is page 72 in the English edition, <em>Seite 82 auf Deutsch<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The first sentence of this section is a good place to start.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a howling outside.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Drau\u00dfen ist gro\u00dfer Radau.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;Outside is large racket.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>I like this one:<br \/>\n&#8220;curled up&#8221; = <em>zusammengerollt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For once it&#8217;s shorter in German:<br \/>\n&#8220;the lulling song for comfort&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>das einlullende Trostlied<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;poppy&#8221; = <em>Mohn<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;song of healing&#8221; = <em>Heilgesang<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s got picturesque sentences:<br \/>\n&#8220;Why does that sound dance like fingernails down my back?&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Warum tanzt dieser L\u00e4rm wie Fingern\u00e4gel \u00fcber meinen R\u00fccken?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;howl back&#8221; = <em>zur\u00fcckzuheulen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;they&#8217;ve gone quiet&#8221; = <em>sind sie mucksm\u00e4uschenstill<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It sounds like nightmares.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Es klingt wie ein Albtraum.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;hissing&#8221; = <em>faucht<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;growling and snapping at me&#8221; = <em>das knurrend nach mir schnappte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;its mouth was smeared with blood&#8221; = <em>mit blutverschmiertem Maul<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;blood hungry for battle&#8221; = <em>um die Blutr\u00fcnstigkeit f\u00fcr die Schlacht<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;scoot away&#8221; = <em>zur\u00fcckweichen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;crouched, preparing to pounce&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>sich duckte und zum Angriff \u00fcberging<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;my sleek gray cat&#8221; = <em>mein schlanker grauer Kater<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No sound from the guards.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Kein Ger\u00e4usch von den Wachen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;a little hiccup sound in his throat&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>leise Schluckaufger\u00e4usche in der Kehle<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;favorite bits&#8221; [to eat]<br \/>\n= <em>Leckerbissen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s clumpy and tastes sour&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Er klumpt und schmeckt sauer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And worse news&#8221; = <em>Und noch eine schlechte Neuigkeit<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;scratching and yipping and rustling&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>scharren und piepsen und rascheln<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;not fit for gentry&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>f\u00fcr eine Adlige nicht schicklich<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll finish with the last sentence of Day 245:<br \/>\n&#8220;Rats squeal and skitter around her, and I hear her lips smack, smack, smack.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Die Ratten jagen quiekend um sie herum und ich h\u00f6re ihre Lippen schmatzen, schmatzen, schmatzen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Und noch eine schlechte Neuigkeit<\/em>:  That&#8217;s all for tonight!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-count=\"none\" data-via=\"Sonderbooks\">Tweet<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s time for Sonderling Sunday!
