It\u2019s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books, sort of a Very Silly Phrasebook for Travelers.<\/p>\n

This week, I’ll be going back to one of my favorite young adult novels, Book of a Thousand Days<\/a><\/em>, by Shannon Hale, known as Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/a><\/em> in German.<\/p>\n

It’s actually been three years since we did a Sonderling Sunday in this book<\/a>! (This is far, far, too long — more than a thousand days!) We’re “Later” on Day 223, which is page 72 in the English edition, Seite 82 auf Deutsch<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The first sentence of this section is a good place to start.<\/p>\n

“There’s a howling outside.”
\n= Drau\u00dfen ist gro\u00dfer Radau.<\/em>
\n(“Outside is large racket.”)<\/p>\n

I like this one:
\n“curled up” = zusammengerollt<\/em><\/p>\n

For once it’s shorter in German:
\n“the lulling song for comfort”
\n= das einlullende Trostlied<\/em><\/p>\n

“poppy” = Mohn<\/em><\/p>\n

“song of healing” = Heilgesang<\/em><\/p>\n

She’s got picturesque sentences:
\n“Why does that sound dance like fingernails down my back?”
\n= Warum tanzt dieser L\u00e4rm wie Fingern\u00e4gel \u00fcber meinen R\u00fccken?<\/em><\/p>\n

“howl back” = zur\u00fcckzuheulen<\/em><\/p>\n

“they’ve gone quiet” = sind sie mucksm\u00e4uschenstill<\/em><\/p>\n

“It sounds like nightmares.”
\n= Es klingt wie ein Albtraum.<\/em><\/p>\n

“hissing” = faucht<\/em><\/p>\n

“growling and snapping at me” = das knurrend nach mir schnappte<\/em><\/p>\n

“its mouth was smeared with blood” = mit blutverschmiertem Maul<\/em><\/p>\n

“blood hungry for battle” = um die Blutr\u00fcnstigkeit f\u00fcr die Schlacht<\/em><\/p>\n

“crouched, preparing to pounce”

“my sleek gray cat” = mein schlanker grauer Kater<\/em><\/p>\n

“No sound from the guards.”

“a little hiccup sound in his throat”
\n= leise Schluckaufger\u00e4usche in der Kehle<\/em><\/p>\n

“favorite bits” [to eat]
\n= Leckerbissen<\/em><\/p>\n

“It’s clumpy and tastes sour”

“And worse news” = Und noch eine schlechte Neuigkeit<\/em><\/p>\n

“scratching and yipping and rustling”
\n= scharren und piepsen und rascheln<\/em><\/p>\n

“not fit for gentry”
\n= f\u00fcr eine Adlige nicht schicklich<\/em><\/p>\n

I’ll finish with the last sentence of Day 245:
\n“Rats squeal and skitter around her, and I hear her lips smack, smack, smack.”
\n= Die Ratten jagen quiekend um sie herum und ich h\u00f6re ihre Lippen schmatzen, schmatzen, schmatzen.<\/em><\/p>\n
