It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>, that time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books. This week, we’re back to the book that started it all, The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a>, otherwise known as Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Last time<\/a>, we left off on page 335 in the English edition, Seite 426<\/em> in the German edition. I’ll begin with the first sentence of the new section:<\/p>\n

“Jo and the Belgian Prankster were alone.”
\n= Jo und der Belgische Scherzkeks waren allein.<\/em><\/p>\n

Aren’t you glad to know how to say these things?
\n“dirty fur pelts, green ski goggles, and enormous rawhide diaper”
\n= schmutzigen Pelze, die gr\u00fcne Skibrille und eine riesige Windel aus Rohleder.<\/em><\/p>\n

“His breathing was forced and shallow”
\n= Er atmete heftig und flach<\/em><\/p>\n

“fatty bulk” = feister Wanst<\/em><\/p>\n

“patchwork” = Flickwerk<\/em><\/p>\n

“Sweating and snuffling, slowly smacking his lips”
\n= Er schwitzte, keuchte, schmatzte<\/em><\/p>\n

This seems like a good sentence to know:
\n“With all her might Jo resisted the mad urge to run away screaming”
\n= Jo musste sich zusammenrei\u00dfen, um dem dringenden Bed\u00fcrfnis zu widerstehen, schreiend wegzulaufen<\/em>
\n(“Jo must herself together-pull, for the urgent need to resist screaming away-running”)<\/p>\n

“almost tempted” = fast geneigt<\/em><\/p>\n

Too bad, they took out the picturesque elements here:
\n“But Jo held her ground with the last shred of her fingernails, even as it seemed to be crumbling away from her.”
\n= Doch Jo widerstand dem Drang mit letzter Kraft, obwohl sie zusehends schw\u00e4cher wurde.<\/em>
\n(“But Jo resisted the urge with last strength, although she rapidly weaker was.”)<\/p>\n

“satisfaction” = Genugtuung<\/em> (“enough-doing”)<\/p>\n

“I’m forlorn”

\n(“I am completely lonely and forsaken.”)<\/p>\n

“Jo gritted her teeth.”

“come back with a nasty insult”

“her voice close to breaking”

“Brave girl!” = Tapferes M\u00e4dchen!<\/em><\/p>\n

“Jo clenched her fists.” = Jo ballte die F\u00e4uste.<\/em><\/p>\n

“devour and devour and devour” = schlingen und schlingen und schlingen<\/em><\/p>\n

“a force” = ein Naturgewalt<\/em><\/p>\n

“an unstoppable, annihilating wave”
\n= eine unaufhaltsame, alles vernichtende Woge<\/em><\/p>\n

“It was a horrible tingle of joy.”
\n= Es war ein schreckliches freudiges Kribbeln.<\/em>
\n(“It was a horrible joyful tingle.”)<\/p>\n

Okay, everybody needs to know how to say this in German:
\n“The nose twitched and quivered in front of her, running juices all over the glass.”
\n= Die Nase zuckte und zitterte vor ihren Augen und Schnodder lief \u00fcber das Glas.<\/em>von Schorf \u00fcbers\u00e4t<\/p>\n

“hideous beak” = grauenvoller Schnabel<\/em><\/p>\n

“sticking out” = herausragte<\/em><\/p>\n

“pricked” = pikste<\/em><\/p>\n

“scratched” = gekratzt<\/em><\/p>\n

“roaring” = br\u00fcllte<\/em><\/p>\n

“a twitching stinger” = ein zuckender Stachel<\/em><\/p>\n

“She was sobbing and screaming” = Sie schluchzte und schrie<\/em><\/p>\n

And the final phrase of Chapter 24:
\n“and then blackness fell like an avalanche”
\n= und dann brach die Schw\u00e4rze wie eine Lawine \u00fcber sie herein<\/em><\/p>\n

And that’s all for tonight! With all your might, do resist the mad urge to run away screaming!<\/p>\n
