This week, I&#8217;m back to the book that drives this whole series, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/order_of_odd_fish.html\">The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a>, otherwise known as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\">Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=36534\">Last time<\/a>, we left off in the middle of Chapter Twenty-Five, on page 344 in the English edition, <em>Seite 437 auf Deutsch.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first sentence has some fun words to know:<br \/>\n&#8220;Jo&#8217;s ready room was a moldy locker area that it seemed had never been cleaned.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Jos Garderobe war ein muffiger Umkleideraum, der offenbar noch nie ges\u00e4ubert worden war.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(My day is complete, now that I can call moldy things <em>muffiger<\/em>.  Seems perfect for that fuzzy appearance&#8230;.  <em>Umkleideraum<\/em> means &#8220;undress-room.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;the tiles were dirty and chipped&#8221; = <em>die Fliesen waren schmutzig und angeschlagen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I hope you never need to use this sentence:<br \/>\n&#8220;and the rusty plumbing dripped with mysterious juices.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>und aus den rostigen Rohrleitungen tropften mysteri\u00f6se Fl\u00fcssigkeiten.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;teasing&#8221; = <em>Neckereien<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;unexpected tenderness&#8221; = <em>unerwarteter Z\u00e4rtlichkeit<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Oh, this one&#8217;s much better in German:<br \/>\n&#8220;a little gasp&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>einen kleinen \u00dcberraschungsschrei<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;a little surprise-cry&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Germans can make up words at a moment&#8217;s notice:<br \/>\n&#8220;cat&#8217;s-head helmet&#8221; = <em>Katzenhelm<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I never get tired of saying this word:<br \/>\n&#8220;silver whiskers&#8221; = <em>silberfarbenen Schnurrbarthaaren<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;pointed ears&#8221; = <em>spitzen Ohren<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;insults&#8221; = <em>Beleidigungen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;hard-core&#8221; = <em>hartgesotten<\/em> (&#8220;hard-boiled&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Okay, this just doesn&#8217;t capture the English:<br \/>\n&#8220;Atta girl&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>So will ich dich h\u00f6ren, M\u00e4dchen<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;That&#8217;s how I want to hear you, girl&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Another one that has come up before, whose sound I love:<br \/>\n&#8220;sipped&#8221; = <em>schl\u00fcrfte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;hero&#8221; = <em>Heldin<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;hissed and bubbled&#8221; = <em>zischte und blubberte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;tickling her veins&#8221; = <em>prickelnd durch ihre Adern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;bruise&#8221; = <em>blauer Fleck<\/em> (&#8220;blue spot&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;putrid air&#8221; = <em>stinkende Luft<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;fabulous&#8221; = <em>fabelhaft<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;demolish&#8221; = <em>auseinandernehmen<\/em> (&#8220;out-another-take&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;pep talk&#8221; = <em>aufmunternder Worte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;usher&#8221; = <em>Lakai<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;stirrups&#8221; = <em>Steigb\u00fcgel<\/em> (&#8220;climb-hangers&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;tumultuous crowd&#8221; = <em>tosende Menge<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;announcer&#8217;s&#8221; = <em>Ansagers<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;cheering&#8221; = <em>spornten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;tying her up&#8221; = <em>sie einzuschn\u00fcren<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;lolled&#8221; = <em>l\u00fcmmelte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;convention of eelmen&#8221; = <em>Abordnung von Aalm\u00e4nnern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;streamers&#8221; = <em>Papierbahnen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;ll stop right before the duel begins:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She looked up and swallowed.  This was it.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Dann blickte sie hoch und schluckte.  Das war&#8217;s.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gute Nacht!
